Turntable Center Spindles
A turntable center adapter is an accessory that allows playing 45 RPM vinyl records on a turntable designed primarily for 33 RPM records. Turntable Center Spindles: Complete guide
This spindle allows for precisely placing the record on the platter and holding it in place during playback. However, 45 RPM records have a larger center hole with a diameter of 38 mm. Therefore, an adapter is necessary to fit these records onto the turntable’s spindle.
The adapter is placed directly on the platter’s drive spindle. It ensures the correct positioning of the record and keeps it in place during playback. Without this accessory, the force exerted by the stylus while playing the record could cause the vinyl to shift, resulting in the cartridge “derailing”.
It should be noted that not all turntable manufacturers and models systematically provide an adapter. In this case, purchasing an adapter is necessary to play your 45 RPM records. Adapters are generally easy to use and can be made of plastic or aluminum.
