Overview
The ArtSound UNI20 is a two-way passive hi-fi speaker designed by Belgian manufacturer ArtSound for small spaces. Despite its compact dimensions, this on-wall speaker delivers a rich, full sound. Its enclosure with neutral lines and rounded corners gives it a discreet, versatile appearance that blends seamlessly into most interiors. Sold in pairs with a ball-joint wall mount, it meets the needs of small rooms where floor space is not an option.
The Universals range: three models, one shared philosophy
The UNI20 is part of the Universals series, a line of speakers developed from over 20 years of expertise, where every detail reflects this accumulated know-how. This range includes three distinct models:
| Model | Coverage | Power | Woofer | Frequency response |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UNI20 | < 20 m² | 10-40 W | 3” | 150 Hz - 20 kHz |
| UNI30 | < 40 m² | 20-60 W | 3” | 100 Hz - 20 kHz |
| UNI40 | < 40 m² | 20-100 W | 5.25” | 60 Hz - 20 kHz |
All share a clean design with an elegant front panel and rounded corners, along with an exclusive mount allowing all kinds of orientations to match any décor.
UNI20 design and construction
The UNI20 uses a two-way system that splits sound reproduction between two dedicated drivers. The woofer handles low and mid frequencies, while the tweeter focuses on the high frequencies. This division promotes better sound reproduction and increased clarity.
The bass driver uses a 3-inch fiberglass cone, coupled with a half-inch PEI (polyetherimide) dome tweeter. PEI tweeters are lightweight and deliver a livelier sound than silk dome models, while remaining less aggressive than aluminum versions. They generally require less power than silk or aluminum dome tweeters, which matches the modest amplification range of the UNI20.
The enclosure is made of ABS, a thermoplastic material that ensures long-term durability and reliability. The dimensions remain compact (150 × 96 × 94 mm for around 750 g per speaker), allowing for discreet installation without sacrificing sound quality.
Installation and multifunctional mount
The supplied wall mount stands out for its versatility and ease of installation. Thanks to the ball joint, the speaker can be aimed in any direction, including horizontally. This flexibility is particularly useful when the speaker is mounted high up: by tilting it downward, you optimize sound projection toward the listening area.
The plug-in screw terminal system greatly simplifies speaker cable connection. These compact passive speakers come with an integrated mount and can be installed on the wall or ceiling, freeing up space on furniture or shelves.
Note: a replacement mount is available separately for the UNI20 and UNI30 models, making it easy to replace if needed.
Use cases and suitable environments
The UNI20 is suitable for use in small areas: hallways, small kitchens, restrooms. It is also well-suited for background music in various settings, including conference rooms or churches for speech reinforcement.
These speakers are designed for indoor use only and are not waterproof. For outdoor use, ArtSound offers the ASW range, while the Happi speakers are specifically designed for bathrooms.
With an 8-ohm impedance and recommended power of 10 to 40 watts, the UNI20 is compatible with most entry-level and mid-range hi-fi amplifiers. Its 90 dB sensitivity allows you to achieve a proper volume level even with modest amplification.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the UNI20 be used as a surround speaker in a home cinema system?
Yes, its compact size and adjustable mount make it a good candidate for the rear channels of a multichannel system. The overlap in low frequencies with a subwoofer ensures coherent sound reproduction for movies. For larger rooms, however, the UNI30 or UNI40 models will be more suitable.
What kind of amplifier is needed to power the UNI20?
The UNI20 works with amplifiers delivering between 10 and 40 W per channel into 8 ohms. A standard stereo hi-fi amp, an AV receiver, or even some compact digital amplifiers are perfectly suitable. Avoid overly powerful amplifiers that could damage the drivers at excessive volume levels.
What is the main difference between the UNI20 and the UNI30?
The UNI30 features a bass-reflex port, a 3-inch paper-cone woofer, and covers a wider frequency range (100 Hz–20 kHz versus 150 Hz–20 kHz for the UNI20). It is recommended for spaces up to 40 m² and accepts amplifiers from 20 to 60 W. The UNI30 therefore offers more body in the low end and is better suited to larger rooms.
Are UNI20 speakers suitable for outdoor installation?
No, speakers in the Universals range are not waterproof and are intended for indoor use only. For a terrace, pool, or garden, look at ArtSound’s ASW series, designed to withstand the elements.
What speaker cable should I use with the UNI20?
A standard speaker cable with a cross-section of 2 × 1.5 mm² to 2 × 2.5 mm² is suitable for typical runs (up to 10–15 meters). The plug-in screw terminal connection accepts bare wire ends. For longer runs, opt for a larger cross-section to limit losses.
