Add a vertical sound dimension to an existing home theater system without drilling into the ceiling or redoing the entire installation: that’s the role of Dolby Atmos “Enabled” speakers. With the AR 5, Canton offers a model that adopts the aesthetic and technical design of its Townus series, designed to sit on top of floorstanding or bookshelf speakers, or to be wall-mounted. Two-way, sealed enclosure, and drivers derived from the German brand’s premium catalog.
Dolby Atmos Enabled speakers like the AR 5 project sound upwards, towards the ceiling. The signal then bounces back toward the listening area to simulate sound sources located above the listener. This method avoids installing in-ceiling or hanging speakers, but it does impose a few constraints: a flat, rigid, reflective ceiling (plaster, concrete, wood) located between 2.3 and 3.6 meters high. Acoustic tiles or very absorbent surfaces compromise the effect. The AR 5 incorporates drivers angled at a precisely calculated degree so that the reflection reaches the listener correctly.
Canton equips the AR 5 with drivers drawn from its high-efficiency know-how. The 154 mm mid-woofer uses a titanium cone, a light and rigid material that limits deformation at high volume. The in-house developed Wave Surround suspension reduces distortion linked to cone excursions while preserving a fast transient response.
The 25 mm tweeter features an aluminum-manganese ceramic dome combined with a “Transmission Front Plate” that controls high-frequency dispersion. This dome extends down to 3,200 Hz and up to 30,000 Hz, which easily covers high-resolution content. The sensitivity of 89.5 dB for 2.83 V at one meter makes the AR 5 compatible with most AV receivers without requiring excessive power. Nominal impedance ranges between 4 and 8 ohms.
The AR 5’s dimensions (17 × 26 × 14.5 cm, 3.6 kg) make it easy to place on a floorstanding or bookshelf speaker. Canton has worked on the proportions so that the speaker visually integrates with the Townus 30, 50, 70, 90, and 100 models, but the AR 5 can also coexist with speakers from other ranges or other brands.
The sealed cabinet eliminates port noise and low-frequency turbulence that could blur the ceiling reflection. The edges are rounded to limit diffraction, and the drivers are integrated into the front baffle with no visible screws. The black acoustic fabric grille attaches magnetically and covers the entire radiating surface. Canton offers three finishes: satin white, high-gloss black, and walnut veneer.
A wall mounting is integrated into the chassis, offering a second installation option: when mounted high on the side or rear walls, the AR 5 can serve as surround effect speakers, independently of any Atmos use.
The AR 5 connects via 24-carat gold-plated screw terminals that can accommodate cables up to 10 mm² in cross-section. Single-wiring is sufficient for this type of speaker with a limited low-frequency range. The useful low-frequency limit of 50 Hz corresponds to the point where Atmos “height” content is generally filtered by the AV receiver’s processor.
To use the AR 5, you need an amplifier or preamp compatible with Dolby Atmos or DTS:X, with outputs dedicated to height channels. The minimum configuration is 5.1.2 (two Atmos Enabled speakers on the front speakers), but Dolby recommends 5.1.4 for more precise localization of sound objects (two AR 5 at the front, two at the rear). The amplifier must be set to “Dolby Atmos Enabled” or “Reflection” mode to apply the appropriate processing for this type of speaker.
The Townus series takes its name from a play on words between “town” and Taunus, the mountain range in Hesse where Canton is headquartered. It includes floorstanding speakers (Townus 70, 90, 100), bookshelf speakers (Townus 30), a center speaker (Townus 50), a subwoofer (Sub 12), on-wall speakers (Townus 10), and this AR 5 dedicated to Atmos channels. Active and connected versions (Smart Townus) round out the lineup.
The AR 5 shares its finishes, drivers, and acoustic philosophy with the rest of the range. In a complete Townus system, tonal consistency is ensured. Canton provides a five-year warranty on its passive speakers.
Yes. The speaker can be placed on any floorstanding or bookshelf speaker that is stable enough to support 3.6 kg. Tonal matching will be more natural with speakers that share a similar sound signature, but there is no technical obstacle to pairing it with an existing system.
The ideal range is between 2.3 and 3.6 meters. Below that, the reflection arrives too quickly and the height effect is less noticeable. Above that, the sound loses energy before reaching the listener. A flat, reflective ceiling (plaster, concrete) gives better results than a coffered ceiling or one covered with absorbent materials.
Yes. The integrated wall mount allows the AR 5 to be installed high on a side or rear wall. Configured as a surround or surround back speaker in the receiver, it functions like a traditional effects speaker.
The AR 5 only extends down to 50 Hz and is not designed to reproduce deep bass. In a home theater setup, the subwoofer handles frequencies below 80–120 Hz (depending on the AV receiver’s crossover setting). The AR 5 only handles height information, which contains very little infrasonic content.
