The Cayin HA-3A impresses at first glance with its distinctive appearance. Its deep black chassis (also available in silver) boasts a fine texture and glossy surface, the result of a rigorous 14-step manufacturing process. Despite its relatively compact dimensions (306 x 260 x 170 mm), its substantial weight of 12 kg attests to the quality of its internal components, notably the three shielded transformers that minimize interference and noise.

The front panel, one centimeter thick, features an ergonomic layout of controls. From left to right, you’ll find the power button, output selector, three headphone jacks (6.35 mm jack, 4.4 mm jack, and 4-pin XLR), a three-position impedance selector, two elegant VU meters backlit in bluish white, the input selector (XLR or RCA), and finally the high-precision ALPS volume potentiometer. The latter offers perfectly smooth and precise rotation, a hallmark of high-end components.

The top of the device is arguably its most visually appealing aspect, with its five tubes casting an amber glow through a removable protective cage. This cage can be taken off to fully admire the spectacle of the tubes in operation—a true invitation to musical contemplation.

It is worth noting that Cayin has recently updated the tube sockets on new HA-3A versions to facilitate sourcing. The new models use Electro Harmonix 6V6GT tubes for the power stage and an RCA 25AX4GT rectifier tube. These changes do not affect the device’s sonic performance, as Cayin has ensured the HA-3A’s renowned sound signature is preserved.

A key feature of the HA-3A is its point-to-point wiring, meticulously hand-assembled by skilled craftsmen. This traditional construction method, more costly but audiophile-grade, optimizes the signal path and minimizes interference. Each 6V6 output tube is paired with a dedicated transformer, ensuring optimal channel separation and output power up to 850 mW on the XLR output.

Connectivity and Versatility: Adapting to Every Need

The HA-3A shines with its versatility, offering exceptional compatibility with virtually all headphones on the market. On the rear, two inputs allow you to connect your sources: an unbalanced RCA input and a balanced XLR input. This dual connectivity lets you integrate the HA-3A into any existing hi-fi system, whether it’s a network player, external DAC, or CD player.

On the front, three headphone outputs are available: a traditional unbalanced 6.35 mm jack, a balanced 4.4 mm jack (Pentaconn format), and a balanced 4-pin XLR output. A selector lets you choose between the balanced outputs or the unbalanced output; simultaneous use is not possible. This design ensures optimal sound quality by directing all power to the selected output.

One of the HA-3A’s most remarkable features is its three-position impedance selector, allowing you to precisely match the amplifier to your headphones’ electrical characteristics:

Using the HA-3A daily is a simple pleasure. After powering on, a delay of about 60 seconds is required for the tubes to reach their optimal operating temperature. During this time, the volume potentiometer’s indicator light blinks to signal that the device is not yet ready.

The two VU meters on the front are not merely decorative; they provide a visual indication of output level. The red zone should be taken seriously, as it indicates a potentially damaging level for your headphones or ears.

The chassis rests on three feet that effectively absorb vibrations—an important detail for a tube amplifier sensitive to microphonics. This design helps preserve signal purity and minimize unwanted noise.

Tube lifespan varies depending on type and usage. On average, 12AU7 preamp tubes can last between 5,000 and 10,000 hours, while 6V6 power tubes generally last 2,000 to 5,000 hours. The rectifier tube falls somewhere between these two extremes. Replacing the tubes is a relatively simple operation that can be performed by the user when necessary.
