The belt is the part that transfers the motor’s rotation to the platter on a belt-drive turntable. The motor, isolated from the platter, drives it via an elastic link fitted around its spindle or the sub-platter. This decoupling is the system’s main advantage: the belt absorbs motor vibrations and jolts, preventing them from reaching the record, resulting in quiet operation and good speed stability on this type of turntable. It is also a wear part. Over time, the rubber stretches, hardens or cracks: symptoms include drifting speed, difficult start-up or audible wow, this variation in pitch on sustained notes. A worn belt is easy to replace and restores the turntable’s precision, a simple, inexpensive maintenance task that avoids wrongly suspecting the mechanics. Replacement requires the correct reference: diameter, cross-section and material vary depending on the turntable, and an incorrectly sized belt slips or puts too much tension on the spindle. Handle it with clean hands, without grease that could make it slip, and a speed marker helps check the adjustment after fitting. On some turntables, a second belt or moving it on the pulley is used to switch from 33 to 45 rpm. This belt maintains a belt-drive turntable, is fitted in the same way as the procedures covered by an adjustment and cleaning kit, and is among a turntable’s consumables along with the stylus.
