Last an entire week away from an outlet, replace the battery and ear pads yourself when they wear out, choose from four bold shades instead of the eternal black: that is what beyerdynamic’s new wireless over-ear headphones offer. The German brand reprises the round shape of its earcups and puts it to use for listening on the go and at home, backed by active noise cancellation and long battery life.

Round earcups in four colors

The round shape of the earcups is a constant in the beyerdynamic catalog, revisited here in an updated design. The headphones are available in four finishes, Liquid Black, Blue Fusion, Peach Blush and Soft Jade, all with the same hardware: choosing a color neither removes nor adds any function; it only affects the style.

The closed over-ear design isolates from outside noise through its construction alone, even before active noise cancellation. The memory foam synthetic leather ear pads conform around the ear, for a weight of 316 g. The headband folds up and slips into the supplied soft pouch; the aluminum yoke, combined with stainless steel hinges, keeps the structure sturdy through everyday handling.

A replaceable battery and ear pads

Wireless headphones rarely stop working all at once: first the ear pads flatten, then the battery loses capacity. The Aventho Y addresses both. The ear pads are held in place by magnets and come off with a simple pull; beneath the left earcup pad, a hinged compartment houses the battery, which can be replaced without tools once it has aged. This approach of maintaining parts rather than throwing them away extends the product’s life well beyond the usual lifespan of a sealed integrated battery.

Up to 90 hours away from the charger

Battery life is one of the Y’s strongest arguments. Without noise cancellation, it promises more than 90 hours of listening; with ANC enabled, still more than 60 hours. Enough to cover several days of travel before thinking about the cable. When charging becomes necessary, five minutes on the USB-C port provide six hours of playback, and one full hour charges the battery. The USB-C to USB-C cable is included in the box.

Adjustable beyerdynamic sound from the app

Under each earcup, a 45 mm dynamic driver covers the 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz range, with the sound character that has built beyerdynamic’s reputation. The closed design retains bass and limits sound leakage. Fine-tuning is handled through the beyerdynamic app, free on iOS and Android: a 5-band equalizer adjusts bass, mids and treble, the headphone controls can be configured, and firmware updates install wirelessly. A fix or new feature can therefore reach the headphones already in your pocket.

Bluetooth 6.0 multipoint and noise cancellation

The wireless connection relies on Bluetooth 6.0 with multipoint functionality: the headphones remain paired with two devices at the same time and switch from one to the other without re-pairing, within an advertised range of 20 m. As for codecs, transmission is limited to SBC and AAC. iPhones use AAC, while Android devices use one or the other depending on their settings; there is no high-resolution codec such as aptX or LDAC, found on higher-end models. Active noise cancellation reduces the hum of transport and open-plan offices, while a transparency mode instead lets surrounding sounds back in. For calls, two environmental noise-cancelling microphones (ENC) separate the voice from the background noise.

The Y compared with the rest of the Aventho range

The name breaks away from the numbering of the Aventho 100, 200 and 300, and this choice reflects a different positioning. The numbered range peaks with the Aventho 300, its German-made STELLAR.45 driver, its high-resolution codecs such as aptX Adaptive and LDAC, and its Dolby Atmos spatial rendering with head tracking. The Y takes a different path: a conventional 45 mm dynamic driver, transmission limited to SBC and AAC, but battery life rising to more than 60 hours with noise cancellation compared with around fifty for the 300, and up to 90 hours without it, plus wear parts that the user can replace themselves. High-resolution detail and spatial sound on one side, longevity and ease of use on the other.
