How 3D emitters work and what they do
A 3D emitter for a projector plays a central role in your 3D home theater setup. It operates by sending a synchronization signal to the active-shutter 3D glasses worn by viewers. This synchronization enables the rapid alternation of images intended for the left and right eyes, several dozen times per second, to recreate the perception of depth.
The different transmission technologies
There are three main synchronization technologies:
RF (radio frequency) technology uses radio waves to communicate with the glasses. Its key advantage: it does not require a direct line of sight between the emitter and the glasses. You can move freely around the room without losing synchronization. This solution is particularly suitable for projectors installed on the ceiling or behind the viewers. Brands like JVC and Xpand offer RF emitters with a comfortable range for home setups.
Infrared (IR) technology works on the same principle as remote controls. It offers good range (typically up to 10 meters) and a wide coverage angle, allowing multiple people to enjoy the 3D experience simultaneously. IR emitters such as the Sony TMR-PJ2 plug directly into the projector via a VESA connection and require neither batteries nor an additional power adapter.
DLP Link is a technology built into DLP projectors. It requires no external emitter: the synchronization signal is transmitted directly via the projected image, in the form of light flashes imperceptible to the naked eye. DLP Link-compatible glasses pick up this signal directly from the screen.
Compatibility and installation
Compatibility is a critical factor when choosing a 3D emitter. Ensure the model you select is compatible with your projector and your 3D glasses. Some emitters are universal and work with multiple brands, while others are specific to a manufacturer (JVC PK-EM2 for JVC projectors, Xpand AE125-RF-PRO for Sony VPL-XW7000ES, etc.).
Installation is generally straightforward: most emitters connect to the projector via a VESA port (3-pin mini-DIN) or USB. Many models are powered directly by the projector, eliminating the need for additional power cables. To optimize reception, place the emitter more than 30 cm from the floor or ceiling, with a clear line of sight to the viewing area.
Range and coverage angle
Range varies by technology and model. RF and infrared emitters typically offer a range of 10 to 20 meters, sufficient for most home installations. Coverage angle is also important if you want to share the 3D experience with multiple viewers spread across the room.
3D experience quality
A quality emitter minimizes unwanted effects such as ghosting and flicker, delivering a comfortable 3D experience. Synchronization accuracy directly affects stability and visual comfort, especially during extended viewing sessions.
Good to know
DLP projectors equipped with DLP Link technology do not require an external emitter: synchronization is handled directly through the projected video signal. In this case, simply use DLP Link-compatible glasses to enjoy 3D.
