Overview

Placed on a low cabinet or directly on the floor, a small speaker sends much of its treble toward listeners’ legs and loses clarity. This stand raises the Play:3 to ear level for a seated person, matches the speaker’s black finish, and conceals its power cord inside the column. It accommodates the speaker horizontally or vertically: for listening to a single speaker, a stereo pair, or the rear channels of a Sonos home theater system.

A steel column to match the Play:3

The stand is made of steel with a black finish matched to the speaker, and its column measures 807 mm. With the Play:3 in place, the drivers sit roughly at ear level for someone seated on a sofa, so the highly directional treble reaches them directly instead of reflecting off the floor or furniture. The base is low and flat, slim enough to slide under the edge of a sofa or armchair when space behind the seat is limited.

The speaker does not simply rest on a platform. The Play:3 has a threaded insert on the back designed for this type of mount, and the stand screws into it: even if bumped, the speaker stays firmly attached to the column. The included brackets match the Play:3’s exact dimensions, which is why the stand fits only this model.

Horizontal or vertical, a bracket for each position

Two metal brackets come with the stand, one for positioning the speaker horizontally and the other vertically. The choice is not purely aesthetic, because the Play:3 detects its orientation and adjusts its sound. Horizontally, it produces stereo sound on its own, with its two mid-bass drivers positioned on either side of the tweeter. Vertically, it switches to mono: this is the position to choose for two Play:3 speakers paired in stereo, or for rear channels behind a Sonos soundbar, with each speaker handling a single channel.

For a home office, bedroom, or kitchen with just one speaker, the horizontal position makes the most sense. When pairing two Play:3 speakers, assemble the stand with the vertical bracket instead.

A power cord concealed inside the column

A channel runs down the back of the column to hold the power cord, which emerges at the base of the stand. From the front, only the speaker and column are visible, with no dangling cable. The power plug is too wide to pass through the opening in the base: first unplug the cord from the Play:3, feed the speaker end through, then reconnect it once the speaker is secured. It is best to do this before screwing the Play:3 onto its bracket.

Spikes or pads to suit the flooring

The stand comes with a choice of two sets of feet. The spikes pass through the pile of carpet or a thick rug to provide firm support and prevent the stand from wobbling. On wood flooring, tile, or polished concrete, adhesive gel pads protect the surface and keep the stand from sliding. A hex key is included with the assembly hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the stand sold individually or as a pair?

Sold individually. For a stereo pair of Play:3 speakers, or for two rear channels in a Sonos home theater system, you need to order two.

Can you install another Sonos speaker on it, such as a One, an Era 100 or a Five?

No. The stands are designed to match the Play:3’s dimensions and mounting point, and no other speaker from the brand has the same form factor. Each current Sonos speaker has its own dedicated stands.

Who makes this stand?

It is made for Sonos by Flexson, a British manufacturer specializing in mounts and brackets for Sonos speakers. Its finish and dimensions match those of the Play:3.

Does the assembly remain stable with the speaker upright?

The Play:3 weighs about 2.6 kg, and when upright, its center of gravity is higher. The wide base and screw fastening keep the unit stable, but on soft flooring, the spikes provide a noticeably firmer footing than the pads. In a high-traffic area or near children and pets, it’s best to place the stand against a wall or in a corner.

At what height should rear speakers be placed in a home theater?

Surround speakers are generally placed at ear level or slightly above, to the sides or slightly behind the listening position. The stand puts the Play:3 at that height for someone seated. They should then be aimed toward the sofa and spaced far enough apart.

Do I need to readjust the speaker after mounting it on the stand?

Yes, it’s recommended. Moving a speaker changes its position relative to the walls and floor, affecting the bass balance. Running Trueplay tuning again in the Sonos app after moving the speaker adjusts the sound to its new position.

Does installation require any special tools?

The hex key needed for assembly is included. A Phillips screwdriver may be needed for some screws, depending on the mount chosen. Allow a few minutes per stand, including threading the cable through the column.
