Focal 100 ICW5 Mounting Kit

Installing an in-wall or in-ceiling speaker is much less stressful when its position has been set before the plasterboard closes off the ceiling. This Focal pre-mounting kit screws into the framework during construction and reserves the exact space for the 100 ICW5 speaker, whether in the ceiling or a wall. On installation day, there is no need to locate joists or risk an inaccurate cut: the speaker fits into an opening made to its dimensions.

A marker installed before the plasterboard

The kit is used in new builds or major renovations, while the framework is still exposed. Focal describes it as a mounting strip paired with a frame that marks out the speaker’s position. The strip attaches between two ceiling joists or between two studs in a partition wall. The frame sits on this strip at the position chosen for listening, rather than wherever the structure dictates. When the plasterboard installer closes everything off, they cut the board along the frame, and the position specified on the plan is reproduced to the millimetre in the finished ceiling.

This step also has the advantage of fixing each speaker’s position while cables are still easy to run. A home cinema installation depends heavily on the symmetry of the rear channels relative to the sofa, and good positioning decided on paper is better than a compromise reached by trial and error once the work is finished.

A frame sized for the 100 ICW5

The frame matches the speaker’s dimensions. The 100 ICW5 requires a 160 mm diameter cutout, its flange measures 184 mm overall, and it extends 82 mm into the wall or ceiling. With the frame in place, the hole is right the first time, and the 184 mm flange neatly covers the edge of the cutout. The 82 mm depth still needs to be checked before installation, particularly in a thin partition wall or a suspended ceiling with very little clearance, because the available cavity determines whether installation is feasible, not the kit.

A 2-way ceiling or wall speaker

The 100 ICW5 is a coaxial speaker: a 13 cm driver with a Polyglass cone houses a 25 mm aluminium inverted-dome tweeter at its centre, so bass and treble originate from the same point. The cone undergoes a “tropicalisation” treatment that protects it from moisture, so the speaker can also be installed in a bathroom. A three-position selector (-3 dB, 0 dB, +3 dB) adjusts the treble level to suit the room, for example to tame reverberation from tiles or a large window. The magnetic grilles, round or square, attach without a visible frame. The kit supports the speaker in all these applications, providing sound in a living area, stereo in a bedroom or surround channels for a home cinema.

Frequently asked questions

Is the kit necessary if the ceiling is already closed?

No. The 100 ICW5 has its own mounting tabs, equipped with a system that prevents the screws from falling out, which clamp the plasterboard from behind. In an existing ceiling, simply cut a 160 mm hole and fit the speaker into it. The pre-mounting kit is only used when the framework is still accessible.

How many kits are needed for a pair of speakers?

One kit per speaker, as it is sold individually. For a pair of 100 ICW5 speakers used as rear channels, you need two. For a multiroom system, you need as many kits as speakers.

Is this kit compatible with other Focal 100 Series in-wall speakers?

No. The frame matches the cutout and overall dimensions of the 100 ICW5. Focal offers dedicated kits for other models in the range, for example for the 100 ICW6 and the 100 IC6ST, for the 100 ICW8 or for the 100 IWLCR5 in-wall speakers. Each kit should be selected according to the exact speaker model.

When should you run the speaker cable?

While the framing is open, just after securing the kit. Run the cable from the amplifier to the frame, leaving enough length to connect the speaker without straining it on installation day. It is best to label each end (front left, rear right, etc.) to avoid wiring errors once the drywall is in place.

What screws are needed to secure the panel?

It depends on the structure. Wood screws are suitable for wooden joists, and self-drilling screws for a metal frame with tracks and studs. It is best to have these screws ready before the drywall installer arrives, so that installing the kit does not delay the work.

Should a fire-rated enclosure be added?

It depends on the wall or ceiling and the regulations that apply to the building. Focal sells a separate fire-rated enclosure for its in-wall and in-ceiling speakers. For a ceiling that must retain its fire rating, check with the installer which model is compatible with the 100 ICW5 and plan to include it when installing the kit.

Does the kit change the sound of the speaker?

No. It is a positioning and mounting accessory. The sound depends on the speaker, the volume of the cavity behind it and its placement in the room. The 100 ICW5’s three-position treble adjustment remains available after installation to adapt the speaker to the room’s acoustics.
