The Formation Bar’s design is certainly appealing, with a cylindrical shape that is thicker in the middle and tapers towards the ends. The brushed metal end plates add a touch of class, and the majority of the soundbar is covered in a black fabric grille stretched over a diamond-shaped honeycomb structure. This soundbar exudes quality, weighing 5.5 kg and measuring 1240 x 109 x 107mm, it stands out with its high-end and robust appearance.

At the heart of the Formation Bar are nine newly created high-performance speakers, optimized to maintain a dedicated center channel while producing a wider soundstage. Each speaker consists of a 25mm “double dome” tweeter and two 65mm woven glass fiber cone woofers. There’s 40W of digital amplification for each driver, a claimed frequency response of 40Hz to 28kHz, digital signal processing, and dynamic equalization.

The Formation Bar is also equipped with impressive wireless connectivity, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1 aptX HD, and Apple AirPlay 2, enabling high-resolution 24/96 stereo music streaming. The Bowers & Wilkins Home app allows you to set up and control the Bar, as well as other Formation products on your network, and use the robust mesh network to create a full 5.1-channel system using the Bass subwoofer and a pair of Flex speakers as surround channels.

It’s important to mention that the Formation Bar supports Spotify Connect and thanks to AirPlay 2, you can listen to Apple Music. The presence of AirPlay and Bluetooth also allows you to listen to other streaming services, as well as Internet radio. The inclusion of aptX HD also means you can enjoy a high-quality Bluetooth connection.

To complete your sonic experience, the Formation Bar can be paired with the Formation Bass wireless active subwoofer. This subwoofer uses a unique patented cylindrical design that allows for the application of opposed dual-driver technology to reduce distortion. It employs two 6.5-inch long-throw bass drivers powered by 250W of Class D amplification. There’s also digital signal processing and dynamic equalization that ensure clean, clear sound, and a claimed frequency response of 20-150Hz.
