Overview

The current powering a hi-fi or home cinema system passes through numerous components before reaching the equipment, and each link in the chain can introduce interference. At Furutech, this reality led to the development of power solutions where the quality of electrical contact and control of resonances play a central role. The FT-SDS NCF (R) embodies this approach: a rhodium-plated Schuko socket incorporating NCF technology, designed to equip audiophile power distributors and strips.

A socket designed for integration in power strips

Unlike the FT-SWS, which is a complete wall outlet with its decorative faceplate, the FT-SDS adopts a compact format intended for integration into power distributors. Its 54.8 × 54.8 × 52 mm dimensions allow it to be incorporated into most distribution strips, whether industrially manufactured or custom assembled.

The nylon and fiberglass body sits on a 1 mm thick zinc and steel reinforcement plate, providing sufficient mechanical rigidity to withstand the stresses of repeated insertion and removal of power plugs. The screw-clamp system accepts conductors with a diameter of 2.8 mm or a cross-section of up to 5.5 mm² (10 AWG), covering the majority of mains cables used in hi-fi.

Alpha copper and rhodium plating

The main conductor is made of pure Alpha (α) copper with a thickness of 0.5 mm. This copper undergoes Furutech’s exclusive Alpha Process treatment Furutech, a two-stage process: cryogenic processing at temperatures between -196 and -250°C, followed by ring demagnetization. The cryogenic treatment modifies the metal’s molecular structure, reducing internal stresses and tightening atomic bonds. Demagnetization then removes magnetic residues likely to affect current flow.

The rhodium plating indicated by the “R” in the reference gives the contacts excellent resistance to corrosion and oxidation. This noble metal is harder than gold, extending contact life and maintaining stable conductivity over time. An alternative gold-plated version is available under the reference FT-SDS NCF (G), offering a slightly different sonic signature depending on preferences.

NCF technology in detail

The NCF (Nano Crystal² Formula) material sets this version apart from standard Furutech outlets. Integrated into the nylon and fiberglass insulation, this exclusive compound combines three elements with complementary properties.

The first is a crystalline material capable of generating negative ions, thereby neutralizing electrostatic charges that naturally accumulate on insulating surfaces. The second converts thermal energy into far-infrared radiation, helping to dissipate the heat produced as current flows. The third combines nano-sized piezoelectric ceramic particles and carbon powder, which transform mechanical vibrations into thermal energy that is then released. This “piezo effect” acts as a passive damper, reducing micro-vibrations induced by 50 Hz alternating current.

An optimized contact system

Furutech has developed a patented pressure plate that increases the contact area between the Alpha conductors and the power wires. This mechanism ensures uniform clamping over the entire cable cross-section, reducing contact resistance and potential hot spots. The firm hold of the conductors also limits micro-movements that could create variations in resistance over time.

The two-pole plus earth design complies with the European Schuko standard (Type F), with a rated capacity of 16 A at 250 V AC. This power margin is more than sufficient to feed a complete audio or video system, even one equipped with high-power amplifiers.

Nano Crystal² technology

Furutech’s Nano Crystal² (NCF) formula combines nano crystals, ceramic, and carbon powder to generate negative ions and reduce static interference, convert thermal energy into far infrared, and damp vibrations and mechanical noise thanks to a reduced piezoelectric effect. The result: improved damping and signal integrity, exclusive to Furutech.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the FT-SDS and the FT-SWS?

The FT-SDS is a Schuko inlet without a faceplate, designed to be mounted inside a power distributor or power strip. The FT-SWS is a complete wall outlet with a carbon fiber faceplate and fixing claws for flush-mounted installation. Both share the same NCF technology and the same rhodium-plated Alpha conductors.

Can I install this socket directly in a wall?

No, the FT-SDS is not intended for direct wall installation. It does not have a suitable mounting system or finishing faceplate. For wall mounting, choose the FT-SWS NCF (R).

What is the difference between the (R) version and the (G) version?

“R” refers to rhodium plating, while “G” indicates 24-carat gold plating. Rhodium offers greater hardness and increased wear resistance. Gold is renowned for its conductivity and a character that some users describe as slightly warmer. The choice depends on personal preference and consistency with the rest of the system.

Does this outlet require burn-in?

Like any electrical component, the metal contacts benefit from an initial period of use during which the contact surfaces are optimized. A few dozen hours of normal use are generally sufficient.

Does this outlet filter the current?

No, the FT-SDS NCF (R) does not incorporate active current filtering. NCF technology acts on resonance damping and the elimination of static electricity but does not alter the mains waveform. For filtering, this outlet should be paired with a dedicated power conditioner.

What type of cable should be used for wiring?

The socket accepts conductors with a cross-section of up to 5.5 mm² (10 AWG). A quality mains cable with OFC or OCC copper conductors and a cross-section of 2.5 to 4 mm² is a good compromise between flexibility and current capacity for most installations.
