Overview

A hi-fi component never vibrates on its own. An amplifier’s transformer, a turntable’s motor or a speaker’s cabinet sets the furniture supporting it into motion, and that furniture in turn sends its own vibrations back to the electronics. This small German foot sits between the two: it screws in place of the original feet and combines an internal suspension with two repelling magnets, with a capacity of 20 kg per support point.

A suspension and two magnets inside 40 mm of aluminium

From the outside, the Matchpoint 200 is a black anodised aluminium disc measuring 40 mm in diameter and 21 mm in height. What matters is inside the housing, which contains two complementary elements. The first is SSC’s proprietary suspension system, the same one used in the Netpoint series: it decouples the component from its support, meaning it breaks the rigid contact through which vibrations travel from one element to another. The second is a pair of magnets mounted in opposition, with poles that repel each other.

This magnetic repulsion addresses a classic limitation of suspension feet. A flexible element decouples a lightweight component well, but compresses under heavy electronics and loses its effectiveness. With the magnets added, the foot supports greater weight while dissipating vibrational energy more effectively, rather than transmitting it. SSC’s sonic aim is a lighter, more dynamic reproduction, free from colouration caused by the furniture or floor.

Screw-in mounting in place of the original feet

The number 200 denotes the version with a central thread. Three threaded adapters are supplied, in M4, M6 and M8: the adapter screws into the component at one end and into the Matchpoint at the other. This mounting method suits anything that accepts screw-in feet, starting with speakers whose inserts normally take spikes (most often M6 or M8), but also certain electronics and turntables with removable screw-in feet.

Before ordering, two checks help avoid surprises. The first concerns the component’s thread diameter, which must match one of the three adapters. The second concerns the available space: the foot’s 21 mm adds to the component’s height, which matters in a hi-fi rack with closely spaced shelves.

How many feet for the component’s weight

At 20 kg per foot, three Matchpoint 200 feet support up to 60 kg, and four up to 80 kg. These figures leave ample capacity for the vast majority of electronics and bookshelf speakers, but a component’s weight is rarely evenly distributed: an amplifier often concentrates most of its mass on the transformer side. It is therefore better to consider the most heavily loaded foot rather than simply dividing the total weight.

The choice between three and four support points also matters. Three feet always ensure firm contact, even on a shelf that is not perfectly flat, whereas four feet can leave one slightly unsupported. For a speaker designed with four inserts, stick with four; under electronics, three feet are often easier to position correctly.

Where the Matchpoint sits in the SSC range

Founded in 1997, SSC manufactures and tests its decoupling accessories in Germany. The Netpoint series introduced the brand’s suspension; the Matchpoint series uses this technology in a larger housing, with increased energy dissipation that accommodates heavier components. Matchpoint models are available with the same top plates as Netpoint models, and it is this plate that determines their use: a central thread for the 200, a cup that accepts a spike for the Matchpoint 300 (62 mm in diameter, 25 kg per foot).

Like any decoupling accessory, its effect depends on the context. A lightweight shelf, hollow wooden furniture or a resonant wooden floor allows more vibrations to circulate than a solid, rigid support, and it is in these situations that the foot has the most work to do.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which threaded adapter to use?

Simply measure the diameter of the original screw or spike: M4 corresponds to 4 mm, M6 to 6 mm and M8 to 8 mm. Unscrewing a speaker spike gives you the answer straight away. If in doubt, the device or speaker manual generally specifies the insert type.

Does the Matchpoint 200 replace the spikes on a floorstanding speaker?

Yes, provided that the speaker inserts are threaded for M4, M6 or M8. The foot then rests on its aluminium base rather than on a spike, which avoids marking a wooden floor or having to use spike cups. You simply need to check that the load per foot remains below 20 kg, which is the case for most floorstanding speakers with four support points.

What should I choose if the device has neither threads nor spikes?

The Matchpoint 200 is not the right version in this case, since its benefit relies on being screwed into place. If the device has spikes, the Matchpoint 300 accommodates them in its cup. For electronics without removable feet or spikes, a model simply placed beneath the chassis is more suitable.

Can the Matchpoint 200 be screwed onto the underside of a speaker stand or a piece of furniture?

Yes, provided the speaker stand or furniture is fitted with threaded inserts of the correct diameters. Many speaker stands accommodate M6 or M8 screw-in spikes: the Matchpoint then decouples the stand and speaker assembly from the floor.

Can Matchpoint 200 be combined with other feet under the same device?

It’s not recommended. Feet with different heights or characteristics unbalance the device and distribute the load unevenly. It’s better to use the same model at all support points to keep the device level and ensure the suspension works uniformly.

What’s the difference compared to the SSC Magicpoint 200?

Both models are based on the same idea, an SSC suspension paired with two opposing magnets, and each supports 20 kg per foot. The Magicpoint 200 is wider and lower (50 mm in diameter and approximately 16 mm high) and can be either screwed in or placed like a washer under the device. The Matchpoint 200, with its narrower profile, fits more easily under devices with closely spaced feet or into inserts near the edge.
