Overview

Six rooms, six sources, six people: the A.6X can simultaneously distribute six different audio streams to six distinct zones, each controlled independently from the music app of your choice. This second generation of the VSSL multizone amplifier is built around a distinctive approach called Native Streaming: no proprietary app to learn, control happens directly from Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, or any streaming app.

Native Streaming: control audio from your usual apps

Most multiroom audio systems impose their own control app, with its limitations and learning curve. VSSL chose the opposite approach. The A.6X natively integrates AirPlay 2, Chromecast built-in, Spotify Connect, and Alexa Cast protocols. The audio stream goes directly from the music app to the desired zone; volume, track selection, and zone choice are managed without leaving Spotify or Apple Music. A guest connected to the same Wi-Fi network can stream their playlist in one room without creating an account or installing an additional app.

This approach has a practical consequence: every new streaming service becomes immediately compatible, without waiting for a firmware update. The A.6X takes advantage of each platform’s native features (Spotify personalized playlists, AirPlay 2 multiroom synchronization) rather than offering a stripped-down copy.

12 Class D channels in a 2U chassis

The A.6X delivers 50 watts per channel into 8 ohms (75 watts into 4 ohms) across its 12 channels, with two stereo channels per zone. Class D amplification maintains silent, fanless operation, allowing installation in a utility closet or closed cabinet, provided a minimum clearance of 5 mm is maintained above the chassis.

The 2U rack format (432 × 88 × 355 mm without feet) fits into a standard 19-inch rack. The included magnetic feet allow multiple units to be stacked on a shelf. The auto-switching 115-230 V power supply simplifies international deployment.

Each zone has its own 7-band parametric equalizer, adjustable from the VSSL app. This is a valuable tool for compensating for the acoustic characteristics of in-wall speakers, which are often difficult to calibrate without software correction. The signal-to-noise ratio above 101 dB and the frequency response from 20 Hz to 50 kHz place the A.6X in a technical category consistent with quality speakers.

Matrix connectivity: six inputs, six outputs, total flexibility

The A.6X manages six matrixed RCA analog inputs, one optical input, and one network input. Any input can be routed to any zone, making it possible to connect a TV, turntable, or CD player and distribute their sound to one or more rooms.

The six RCA analog outputs work on the same matrix principle. They can feed an external amplifier (home theater, high-end system) at line level, with a choice between variable output (volume controllable from the smartphone) or fixed output. This architecture makes the A.6X as much a distributed preamplifier as an integrated amplifier.

The included infrared sensor and IR input allow commands from an external remote control to be learned and assigned to a zone, for cases where a local source has its own control.

Home automation integration: Control4, Crestron, URC

VSSL offers free drivers for Control4 (developed with Chowmain Software), Crestron Home, Crestron SIMPL, and URC. Integration allows bidirectional control of volume, mute, and input selection from existing home automation interfaces. One limitation inherent to Native Streaming: streams cannot be initiated from Control4 or Crestron, since the music always starts from the user’s app. Home automation systems handle transport and volume, not content selection.

This coexistence is useful in homes equipped with a complete home automation system: occupants use their usual music apps while ambient scenes or centralized commands retain control over volume and zone status.

Voice control with Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri

The A.6X responds to voice commands from the three major assistants. “Alexa, play jazz in the living room” or “Hey Siri, set the volume to 30% in the kitchen” work without complex configuration once the zones are declared in Google Home or the Apple ecosystem. Google Home integration manages zone groups for simultaneous playback.

Setup and network requirements

The A.6X requires a wired Ethernet connection to the router; it does not include standalone Wi-Fi. This requirement guarantees more stable connectivity than wireless for a device potentially distributing six simultaneous high-resolution streams.

Initial setup goes through the Google Home app to declare the zones on the network, then through the VSSL app for audio settings (equalization, volume limits, zone names). Once this step is complete, neither app is needed for daily use. VSSL recommends not connecting more than four speakers per zone and observing a minimum impedance of 4 ohms per channel.

Firmware updates are applied automatically during idle periods, without manual intervention.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the A.6X work over Wi-Fi or is an Ethernet cable required?

An Ethernet connection is required. The A.6X does not include a standalone Wi-Fi module. This technical choice guarantees stable bandwidth to handle up to six simultaneous audio streams without dropouts.

Can you distribute music from a TV to in-wall speakers in another room?

Yes. Simply connect the TV’s audio output (optical or RCA) to one of the A.6X inputs and route that source to the desired zone via the VSSL app. If the TV is equipped with an Apple TV, distribution can also happen through AirPlay 2 without additional cabling.

How many speakers can be connected per zone?

VSSL recommends a maximum of four speakers per zone, while maintaining a minimum total impedance of 4 ohms. Beyond that, the amplifier may overheat or trigger protection mode.

Is the VSSL app needed for daily use?

No. After initial setup, all music management is done from streaming apps (Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, etc.). The VSSL app is only used to change equalization settings, volume limits, or zone names.

Does the A.6X support high-resolution audio?

The amplifier handles streams up to 24-bit / 192 kHz via compatible protocols (AirPlay 2, Chromecast). Actual playback quality depends on the quality of the source stream and the capabilities of the streaming app being used.

Can the A.6X be used with an existing Control4 or Crestron system?

Yes. Free drivers are available for Control4, Crestron Home, and Crestron SIMPL. Integration allows volume and inputs to be controlled from the home automation interface. However, starting a music stream must always originate from the user’s streaming app.

What happens if several people want to listen to different music at the same time?

That is precisely the A.6X’s main function. Six users can distribute six distinct sources to six different zones, each from their own device. It is also possible to group zones for synchronized listening in multiple rooms.

Does the A.6X include a physical remote control?

No. Control happens through streaming apps, voice assistants, or home automation interfaces. However, an infrared sensor makes it possible to learn commands from a third-party remote control to operate an external source connected to the A.6X.
