Overview
The Saturn has been part of Rega’s lineup for several generations, and this MK3 version takes the fundamentals of its predecessor, the Saturn-R, and places them in a redesigned case to blend with the rest of the British manufacturer’s range. Two functions coexist in this chassis: a top-loading CD transport and a fully independent digital-to-analog conversion section. Both can be controlled via the Solaris remote supplied with the unit.
A chassis designed for mechanical stability
The top-loading approach is not an aesthetic whim. Rega chose it to eliminate the vibration and alignment issues that can be caused by motorized drawers. The lid opens and closes smoothly, revealing a central well where the disc rests on a spring-loaded hub. Simply lift the cover, even during playback, and the disc stops spinning and can be replaced. This mechanism does, however, require a vertical clearance of around 170 mm above the unit.
The rigid aluminum chassis weighs nearly ten kilograms. Damping feet decouple the player from its support. The front panel, in glossy black acrylic, is understated: a power switch on the left, a red LCD display in the center, and four control buttons (play/pause, stop, next/previous track) on the right. The front is held in place by two solid aluminum side cheeks that reinforce the refined appearance of the whole.
Audio signal conversion and processing
The DAC section is based on a pair of Wolfson WM8742 converters configured in dual mode. This chip is not the newest on the market, but Rega chose it for its sonic qualities and has built up sufficient stocks to guarantee long-term production. The unit accepts PCM streams up to 192 kHz at 24-bit; DSD playback is not supported.
A high-stability master clock governs data processing. The digital interface receiver operates with an efficient phase-locked loop, and the digital inputs are isolated to reduce interference. The power supply for the CD section comes directly from the development work carried out on the brand’s reference components. The microcontroller and display circuits have been optimized to keep noise and interference at virtually inaudible levels.
The Saturn MK3 offers ten selectable digital filters accessible from the remote: five for low sampling rates (32, 44.1, 48 kHz) and five for medium and high rates (88.2, 96, 176.4, 192 kHz. Rega suggests starting with filter 1 and then exploring the others according to sources and listening preferences.
Extensive connectivity for versatile use
The rear panel packs an unusually high density of connectors for a CD player. On the digital input side, there are two coaxial S/PDIF sockets, two Toslink optical sockets, and an asynchronous USB-B port. This last one benefits from the same galvanic isolation as the Rega DAC-R and works with dedicated drivers under Windows, allowing full ASIO mode. On Mac, no driver installation is required.
On the output side, the architecture stands out through the separation of the CD and DAC sections: each has its own optical output and its own coaxial output. This configuration makes it possible to use the Saturn MK3 as a pure CD transport feeding an external converter, or to route the digital signal to another zone. An unbalanced RCA analog output completes the package for direct connection to an amplifier.
Three LEDs located near the USB port indicate the status of the connection: power supplied by the computer, active communication, and data stream in progress.
Sound reproduction and Rega signature
The Saturn MK3 is firmly rooted in Rega’s sonic tradition: a strong sense of musicality that favors listening pleasure over clinical neutrality. The bass is solid and well defined, with a foundation that can be surprising on recordings where such depth was not suspected. The midrange remains rich and present, while the treble avoids any aggressiveness, even on demanding recordings.
This signature allows for long listening sessions without listening fatigue. Timing and sense of rhythm are key strengths of the unit, in some respects reminiscent of vinyl playback. The soundstage is precise rather than excessively wide, with good instrument separation.
The DAC section, when used with external sources such as a network player or a television, retains this sonic coherence. Differences between the digital filters remain subtle, but according to Rega, the minimum-phase filter (position 2) delivers a particularly natural rendering.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Saturn MK3 require a driver to work via USB with a computer?
On Mac, no installation is necessary: simply select the Saturn as the audio output in the system preferences. On Windows PCs, a dedicated driver must be downloaded from the Rega website before first use. This driver enables full ASIO operation, avoiding the signal degradation caused by generic Windows drivers.
Can the Saturn MK3 be used solely as an external DAC, without ever playing CDs?
Yes, the DAC section operates completely independently. You can connect a network player, a TV, or a computer to the digital inputs and enjoy the conversion without ever inserting a disc. The remote control allows you to switch between CD and DAC modes.
What is the difference between the CD digital outputs and the DAC digital outputs?
The CD digital outputs transmit the signal directly from the transport, without passing through the conversion stage. The DAC digital outputs carry the signal after it has been processed by the converter. This distinction allows you to use an external DAC of your choice or route the signal to different systems according to your needs.
Do the digital filters significantly change the sound?
The differences between the filters are subtle and are more about fine-tuning than radical transformation. Rega recommends starting with filter 1 (the default setting) and experimenting with different sources and sampling rates. Filter 2, the minimum-phase option, is often perceived as delivering a particularly natural sound.
Does the Saturn MK3 play DSD files?
No, the unit is limited to PCM streams up to 192 kHz at 24-bit. DSD files are not supported, either via the USB input or via the S/PDIF inputs.
