Gold Note B-5.1

Overview

The B-5.1 from Gold Note represents the culmination of over thirty years of expertise in tonearm design. This 9-inch, ball-bearing model combines Italian artisanal manufacturing with high-precision German components, delivering a vinyl playback solution compatible with virtually all cartridges on the market up to 15 grams.

Mechanical construction: precision serving the signal

The rectified 6000-series aluminum arm tube measures 12 mm in diameter with a wall thickness of 1 mm. This alloy, chosen for its specific combination of rigidity and damping properties, forms a straight structure that minimizes parasitic resonances. Opting for a straight rather than an angled tube eliminates areas of concentrated mechanical stress and ensures uniform transmission of vibrations from the cartridge.

The four micro ball bearings constitute the technical heart of this arm. Manufactured in Germany by GRW, a company specialized for over 50 years in high-precision miniature bearings, these components are produced exclusively for Gold Note to a strict specification. GRW, based in Rimpar near Würzburg, employs over 400 people and manufactures 20 million miniature bearings per year, with sub-micron machining tolerances. The B-5.1’s bearings are individually sealed and packaged separately to preserve their integrity during storage and transport. This approach guarantees silent operation and a complete absence of mechanical play—crucial elements for reading the micro-modulations of the vinyl groove.

The vertical pivot system uses manually adjusted stainless steel axles, while horizontal movement is handled by two micro-bearings directly inserted into the rectified main pivot. This configuration enables smooth motion in both planes with vertical sensitivity of just 4 mg, ensuring precise tracking of the most delicate modulations.

Geometry and adjustments: calculated versatility

With an effective length of 242 mm and a 19 mm overhang, the B-5.1 adopts a classic geometry for a 9-inch arm. The 24-degree offset angle and 10-gram effective dynamic mass allow the use of a wide range of cartridges, from low-compliance moving coils to more compliant moving magnets.

The machined stainless steel counterweight offers an extended adjustment range for vertical tracking force (VTF), calibrated at 0.186 N (19 g). Optional add-on weights allow the arm to accommodate heavier cartridges, extending its compatibility beyond the standard 15-gram limit. The dual-counterweight system facilitates precise balancing, particularly useful when mounting cartridges with atypical mechanical characteristics.

Vertical tracking angle (VTA) adjustment is carried out via a set collar on the 23 mm diameter mounting shaft. This standardized dimension ensures compatibility with the majority of turntables on the market. Azimuth, crucial for channel balance and minimizing distortion, is adjusted directly at the headshell, allowing precise alignment of the stylus in the groove.

Internal wiring: uncompromised signal transmission

The internal AWG36 wiring uses a Litz construction with 99.9999% pure OFC (Oxygen-Free Copper). This technology, initially developed for high-frequency applications, consists of multiple strands individually insulated with enamel varnish before being twisted together. Each strand conducts the signal independently, reducing skin effect and inter-conductor interference.

Shielding of the Hyper Litz cable protects the signal from surrounding electromagnetic interference, particularly important in the arm area where signal levels are lowest (a few millivolts for a moving-coil cartridge). The wiring maintains a constant impedance along its entire length, preserving signal integrity from the cartridge to the phono preamplifier.

The supplied external cable, 1.5 meters long, uses a standard 4-pin DIN connector at the turntable end and RCA plugs at the amplifier end. This configuration allows easy cable replacement if necessary, while maintaining consistently high connection quality.

Practical features and ergonomics

The integrated hydraulic lift protects the stylus at the end of a side. Its fluid-damped mechanism ensures a gradual, jerk-free arm raise, preventing any risk of skipping or lateral sliding of the cartridge. This fully mechanical system requires no adjustment and maintains its characteristics over time.

Anti-skating uses a thread-and-weight system with five adjustment positions. This traditional yet proven method applies a calibrated lateral force to compensate for the arm’s natural tendency to be drawn toward the center of the record. The five positions allow the compensation to be adapted to different tracking forces and cartridge types.

The black anodized aluminum finish gives the arm a refined aesthetic that blends harmoniously with contemporary turntables. Anodizing also provides durable protection against corrosion and scratches, preserving the arm’s appearance over years of use.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the B-5.1 and unipivot tonearms? The B-5.1 uses ball bearings that offer superior lateral stability compared to unipivots. This design eliminates potential arm wobble and keeps azimuth constant during playback, which is particularly beneficial for cartridges sensitive to angle variations.

Do GRW bearings require special maintenance? The bearings are factory sealed and require no maintenance. Their hermetic design protects them from dust and moisture. GRW guarantees the preservation of initial tolerances throughout the normal lifespan of the product.

Can the internal wiring be modified or upgraded? While technically possible, replacing the original wiring is not recommended. The AWG36 Hyper Litz cable was specifically selected for its electrical and mechanical characteristics. Modifying it could alter the wiring’s flexibility and hinder the arm’s free movement.

How can I determine if my turntable is compatible with the B-5.1? Compatibility depends primarily on the mounting hole diameter for the arm shaft (23 mm for the B-5.1) and the pivot-to-spindle distance required to achieve correct geometry. The 242 mm effective length suits turntables that accept standard 9-inch arms.

What cartridge compliance range can the B-5.1 accommodate? With its 10-gram effective mass, the arm is ideally suited to cartridges with medium to low compliance (8–20 μm/mN). Very high-compliance cartridges may produce excessive resonance, while very low-compliance models could lack damping.

Can the B-5.1 be used with 78 rpm records? Technically yes, provided you use an appropriate 78 rpm cartridge. The arm accepts all standard half-inch mount cartridges. Tracking force and anti-skating settings will need to be adapted to the specific characteristics of these generally heavier cartridges.
