Ortofon MC Diamond Cartridge: A Concentration of Technologies

The MC Diamond represents the pinnacle of Ortofon’s expertise. It benefits from the latest advancements in acoustics, magnetism, materials science, and micro-mechanics. Its titanium body, machined by selective laser melting, provides optimal rigidity and acoustic neutrality. The density of the titanium is finely controlled to achieve ideal internal damping.

Diamond is omnipresent in this cartridge, not just at the stylus tip. Indeed, the cantilever is entirely made of diamond, a material with unmatched rigidity that allows for incredibly precise groove tracking. The Replicant 100 stylus, specifically designed by Ortofon, offers an ideal contact geometry that faithfully reproduces the original recording.

At the heart of the MC Diamond is an extremely sophisticated moving coil generator system. The coils are made of very high-purity OFC copper and mounted on a non-magnetic material armature. The whole assembly is maintained by Ortofon’s proprietary Wide Range Damping (WRD) system: a platinum disc is sandwiched between two rubber absorbers with complementary properties, ensuring progressive damping and unshakable groove tracking.

The lower part of the body is made of thermoplastic elastomer (TPE), a material that provides additional damping and effectively filters out unwanted resonances. Every detail of the MC Diamond has been designed to serve sound performance, with no compromises.

Its compliance of 9 allows it to accommodate medium to high-mass tonearms. Ortofon recommends a tracking force of 2.4 g and a phono load above 10 ohms, parameters to be finely adjusted according to the cartridge.
