Hifiman EF500
Headphone Amplifier and DAC Hifiman EF500
The Hifiman EF500 is a headphone preamplifier designed to offer a high-quality listening experience for audiophiles. It combines a precise digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and a powerful amplifier in an elegant chassis, standing out for its sound performance and versatility.
Design and Construction
The EF500 features a sleek vertical design, reminiscent of its big brother, the EF600. Its substantial weight, partly due to its robust base, provides great stability on any surface. The build quality is impeccable, with a solid chassis and a bolted aluminum front panel that adds an industrial touch while reinforcing structural integrity.
The minimalist front panel includes a prominent volume knob and a dedicated button to switch between high and low gain modes. Four options allow you to choose between oversampling (OS) and non-oversampling (NOS) to suit user preferences. The headphone outputs include a 6.35 mm unbalanced jack and a 4-pin balanced XLR jack.
At the back, there are balanced XLR outputs, unbalanced RCA outputs, a coaxial input, and an Ethernet port to use the EF500 as a streamer. The connectivity also includes USB-C and USB-B ports, offering multiple connection possibilities to different sources.
Technical Specifications
At the heart of the EF500 is the R2R Himalaya LE DAC, specially designed by Hifiman. This component handles most of the signal processing thanks to a network of 0.01% precision resistors. This approach, dubbed “ladder” by Hifiman, preserves the musicality and precision of the digital signal, delivering highly faithful sound reproduction. These features demonstrate Hifiman’s commitment to providing high-end audio devices capable of reproducing the finest details with great purity.
Sound Quality
During my extensive listening sessions, the EF500 impressed me with its ability to enhance the unique character of each headphone while maintaining great coherence. The soundstage is particularly wide, with a nice sense of space and excellent instrument separation.
In NOS mode, the midrange gains presence and warmth, highlighting vocals, especially female voices. However, this can sometimes give an impression of excessive proximity, which may become tiring over time. The OS mode offers a more balanced and neutral rendering, with high or low gain making little difference.
In the bass, the EF500 is both precise and generous. The focus is on the lower midrange, with a nice roundness and a high level of detail. The extreme low end is slightly recessed but still extends lower than the EF499. The response is quick and tight, allowing easy tracking of bass lines even in dense mixes.
The midrange, as mentioned earlier, is emphasized in NOS mode, with a beautiful texture and rich harmonics. Vocals are particularly well-served, with striking naturalness and presence. In OS mode, the midrange is more recessed but retains a good level of detail and great clarity.
In the treble, the EF500 demonstrates beautiful extension and great refinement. The harmonics are rich and detailed, without any harshness or aggressiveness. The reproduction of cymbals and percussion is very delicate, with a lovely sense of air and space.
Overall, the EF500 offers an immersive and engaging listening experience, with excellent dynamics and great realism. Its powerful amplification allows it to drive most headphones on the market with ease, even the most demanding models.
