The iFi Audio ZEN CAN 3 is the latest addition to the ZEN series, a range of compact and affordable audio devices designed for music enthusiasts. This headphone amplifier stands out with its fully analog design, balanced Class A amplification, and compatibility with innovative xMEMS technology.

Modern Design and Premium Components

The ZEN CAN 3 boasts a modern and elegant look, the result of French designer Julien Haziza’s work. Its chassis features a two-tone finish that contrasts with the classic black casing of hi-fi devices. The front buttons, arranged in a smile shape, add a touch of originality.

Beneath its exterior, the ZEN CAN 3 incorporates carefully selected components for their audiophile performance. These include TDK C0G capacitors, a TOCOS volume potentiometer, and low-noise integrated circuits from Texas Instruments. The amplification stage employs iFi/AMR’s proprietary “OV” operational amplifiers, known for outperforming generic chips.

Comprehensive and Versatile Connectivity

In terms of connectivity, the iFi Audio ZEN CAN 3 is particularly generous. It features three analog inputs: a stereo RCA, a 3.5 mm stereo mini-jack, and a 4.4 mm balanced Pentaconn. This variety allows it to be paired with multiple sources such as a CD player, network player, or external DAC.

On the front, there are two headphone outputs: a 6.35 mm unbalanced jack and a 4.4 mm balanced Pentaconn. At the rear, a 4.4 mm line output allows connection to a pair of active speakers or a power amplifier.

Thanks to its discrete output stage operating in pure Class A, the ZEN CAN 3 delivers remarkable power, reaching up to 1600 mW at 32 Ω unbalanced and 2000 mW at 64 Ω balanced. This is enough to drive almost all headphones and earphones on the market, from in-ear monitors to the most demanding planar headphones.

A front selector allows you to adjust the gain from 0 to +18 dB in 6 dB steps. This makes it possible to finely tune the amplification according to the sensitivity of the transducers used. The ZEN CAN 3 is also particularly quiet with in-ear monitors.

100% Analog Signal Processing, No DSP

Unlike many competing devices, the iFi Audio ZEN CAN 3 eschews any digital signal processing. Here, there is no DSP or digital-to-analog conversion; the signal path remains entirely in the analog domain from input to output.

This choice by iFi Audio aims to preserve the integrity and purity of the sound, minimizing distortion and phase shift. It also allows for more natural tone adjustments, free from the artifacts inherent in digital processing.

Clever Analog Equalization Modes

The ZEN CAN 3 offers four analog equalization modes accessible via a front button. In addition to the classic XBass+ (bass boost) and XSpace (soundstage expansion), two new modes make their debut: “Movie” and “Gaming.”

The Movie mode is specially designed to enhance the intelligibility of dialogues, often buried in the soundtracks of movies and series. By subtly boosting the midrange, it allows voices to stand out better without distorting the original mix.

The Gaming mode, on the other hand, highlights the tiniest sound details like footsteps or rustling. By refining the reproduction of micro-dynamics, it offers a definite advantage to gamers seeking realism and precision.

Unprecedented compatibility with xMEMS transducers

The iFi Audio ZEN CAN 3 is uniquely compatible with xMEMS transducers, a cutting-edge technology that revolutionizes the operation of earphones and headphones. Based on silicon membranes rather than traditional diaphragms, xMEMS speakers are characterized by ultra-fast frequency response and virtually zero phase shift.

To fully leverage this type of transducer, the ZEN CAN 3 can provide high voltage combined with very low background noise. It thus offers xMEMS earphone users a high-resolution, faithful, and transparent listening experience.

Sound quality
