Audeze CRBN2
Audeze CRBN2 Electrostatic Headphones
The CRBN2 is the latest addition to Audeze’s range of electrostatic headphones. As the successor to the CRBN released in 2021, it promises to further enhance sound performance, particularly in the bass range, while maintaining a design similar to its predecessor. Hand-assembled in California, this open-back circumaural headphone is clearly positioned in the ultra-high-end segment.
A New Generation Electrostatic Transducer
At the heart of the CRBN2 is the second-generation electrostatic transducer developed by Audeze. Its ultra-thin polyimide diaphragm is infused with carbon nanotubes for precisely controlled electrical conductivity across the entire film volume. With a generous size of 120 mm x 90 mm, this push-pull transducer offers an extended frequency response from 10 Hz to 40 kHz.
SLAM Technology for Powerful and Tactile Bass
The major innovation of the CRBN2 is the integration of SLAM (Symmetric Linear Acoustic Modulator) technology, a first for an electrostatic headphone. This patented acoustic system optimizes air pressure distribution on the transducer, enhancing low-frequency performance without increasing distortion. The result is deep, physical bass with striking realism.
Holographic Stereo Image Spatialization
Thanks to the unmatched transparency of its electrostatic transducer and the bass response provided by SLAM technology, the CRBN2 delivers a stereo image with holographic precision. The soundstage is vast, and each element is perfectly localized, giving the impression of being at the heart of the musical performance.
Luxurious Design and Premium Materials
Echoing the lines of the CRBN, the CRBN2 sports a similar look with a few additional golden touches. The materials used are of very high quality:
- Polymer acetate shells
- Magnesium arms
- Carbon fiber headband with stainless steel adjustment
- Premium leather ear pads and headband
Despite these noble materials, Audeze has managed to keep the weight at 480 g, which is substantial but acceptable for a headphone of this size. Long-term comfort has been a particular focus.
Demanding Electronics
The CRBN2 requires a specific amplifier delivering a 580V polarization, known as “Stax Pro Bias.” There are several compatible models from different brands available on the market. The supplied 2.5 m cable is made of OCC monocrystalline copper with a 5-pin termination.
In terms of specifications, Audeze announces a frequency response extending from 10 Hz to 40 kHz, a maximum SPL level above 120 dB, and a harmonic distortion rate below 0.1% at 90 dB. The sensitivity is 100 dB (1 kHz, 100 V RMS).
A Sound Experience
Thanks to SLAM technology and the new 2nd generation transducer, the CRBN2 is capable of delivering powerful and realistic bass like no other electrostatic headphone. The reduction in distortion provides a better stereo image and a more natural presentation of details.
The listening experience is described as immersive, with a wide and deep soundstage. Transparency and dynamics are present, conferring striking realism to high-resolution recordings.
Is the CRBN2 suitable for portable use?
No, the CRBN2 is an open-back headphone designed for home listening in a quiet environment. On one hand, its open design provides no acoustic isolation, and on the other, it requires a bulky electrostatic amplifier to operate. It is a headphone intended for audiophiles who want to enjoy very high-level sound reproduction under optimal listening conditions.
What is the difference between the CRBN2 and the CRBN?
The main advancement of the CRBN2 is the integration of SLAM technology, which improves pressure management on the diaphragm. This results in better bass performance and even lower distortion. The design has also been slightly revised with a few additional gold elements.
Do you need high-resolution files to fully enjoy the CRBN2?
While the CRBN2 can enhance high-resolution recordings, it will deliver excellent performance even with standard CD-type files (16-bit / 44.1 kHz). The headphone’s transparency will highlight the quality of the recording above all.
Is the CRBN2 suitable for mastering or mixing in the studio?
The CRBN2 is not designed for professional studio use, although it can serve as an excellent listening reference to validate a mix or mastering due to its high precision in reproduction. However, its high impedance and strong dependence on amplification make its integration into a studio monitoring chain challenging. It is primarily an audiophile headphone dedicated to leisure listening in optimal home conditions.
