Accuphase DP-770 High-Fidelity CD/SACD Player
The Accuphase DP-770 is a high-end CD/SACD player that embodies excellence in audio reproduction. This model succeeds the DP-750 and draws inspiration from the advanced technologies of the DP-1000/DC-1000 combo, aiming to deliver the best possible performance and sound quality. The DP-770 stands out with its newly developed SA-CD/CD playback mechanism, featuring an innovative damper that effectively reduces vibrations. This enhancement results in increased vibration resistance and more precise disc playback.
CD/SACD Playback Mechanism
At the heart of the DP-770 is an exceptionally precise CD/SACD playback mechanism. This high-performance transport alone weighs 6.9 kg and rests on a 3.4 kg base, creating a low center of gravity that enhances stability and reduces vibrations. The mechanism is surrounded by a fixed aluminum frame and a wide top bridge, also made of aluminum, which reinforce its rigidity.
Disc rotation is ensured by an outer rotor brushless DC motor, chosen for its precision and quiet operation. Special dampers isolate the mechanism from external vibrations, while the loading tray, equipped with high-precision bearing shafts, ensures smooth disc handling.
Digital-to-Analog Conversion Technology
The DP-770 employs cutting-edge technologies for digital-to-analog conversion. For PCM signals, it uses two ES9028PRO chips from ESS Technologies, configured in a dual-DAC setup. Each audio channel benefits from the chip’s eight decoding circuits, thus optimizing overall performance.
For DSD signals, Accuphase has developed the proprietary MDSD (Multiple Double Speed DSD) technology. This innovative system divides the DSD stream into eight distinct signals per channel, split into two groups of four signals offset by half a period. Each signal is then processed by one of the eight conversion circuits of the ES9028PRO chip, bypassing traditional delta-sigma conversion. This approach significantly reduces background noise compared to conventional conversion methods.
Signal Processing and Noise Reduction
The DP-770 incorporates several advanced technologies to optimize audio signal quality. The ANCC (Accuphase Noise and Distortion Canceling Circuit) operates after conversion to further reduce noise and distortion. A high-precision current-to-voltage (I-V) converter finalizes signal processing before the output stage.
To minimize interference, Accuphase has physically separated the power supply, conversion circuit, and analog circuit on individual boards. This arrangement helps maintain signal purity throughout the audio chain.
Connectivity and Versatility
The DP-770 offers extensive connectivity to accommodate various audio configurations. Digital inputs include a USB-B port compatible with PCM signals up to 32 bits/384 kHz and DSD up to 11.2 MHz, a coaxial S/PDIF input, an optical Toslink input, and Accuphase’s proprietary HS-Link input.
Digital outputs include an optical Toslink output, a coaxial S/PDIF output, and an HS-Link output. For connection to amplifiers and preamplifiers, the DP-770 provides balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA analog outputs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the DP-770 play audio files from data discs?
Yes, the DP-770 can play audio files stored on CD-R/-RW and DVD-R/-RW/+R/+RW data discs. It supports various formats, including WAV, FLAC, DSF, and DSDIFF.
What is the difference between the MDS++ and MDSD technologies used in the DP-770?
MDS++ (Multiple Delta Sigma++) is used for PCM signal conversion, while MDSD (Multiple Double Speed DSD) is specifically designed for processing DSD signals. MDSD allows for direct conversion of DSD signals without an intermediate PCM conversion step, thus preserving the integrity of the original signal.
Does the DP-770 require a warm-up time to reach optimal performance?
Like most high-end audio equipment, the DP-770 benefits from a warm-up period to reach optimal performance. It is recommended to leave it on for about 30 minutes before critical listening to allow the internal components to reach their ideal operating temperature.
Is it possible to use the DP-770 solely as an external DAC?
Absolutely. With its multiple digital inputs, the DP-770 can be used as a high-quality external DAC for other digital sources, such as a computer or network player. This allows you to enjoy its exceptional conversion performance with a variety of audio sources.
