Tubes aren’t just for amplifiers. Line Magnetic uses them here at the output stage of a disc player, at the precise point where the signal becomes analog again, to give the sound reproduction the warmth characteristic of this technology. The LM-32CD plays CDs, but also accepts a computer source through its rear USB input, and forms a coherent system with the brand’s amplifiers.

A tube output stage

The LM-32CD’s distinguishing feature lies in what happens after digital-to-analog conversion: the signal passes through a tube output stage before reaching your cables. This step colors the sound with a warmth and roundness that fully transistor-based designs rarely produce. Line Magnetic claims a warm, open, and natural signature, with good airiness in the upper part of the spectrum.

This coloration should be seen for what it is: a design choice, not a pursuit of clinical neutrality. The tube softens transients and rounds out timbres, which will appeal with voices or acoustic instruments, and a little less to those seeking the most analytical reproduction possible. Like any tube device, the LM-32CD requires a few minutes of warm-up before delivering its full potential, and after years of use, its output stage will eventually require a tube replacement.

CD player and USB input

The LM-32CD fulfills two functions. It plays your audio CDs through its built-in mechanism, and it decodes a digital stream from a computer thanks to its rear-panel USB input. The same conversion electronics and the same tube stage process both sources, resulting in a consistent sonic character regardless of the medium being played.

This USB input remains the player’s only digital input: no coaxial, optical, or AES/EBU input is provided. The LM-32CD is therefore not intended to centralize multiple digital sources the way a dedicated converter would. Its connectivity stays focused on the essentials, with the computer as the only possible external source.

Pairing with Line Magnetic electronics

At the output, the LM-32CD offers two formats: an unbalanced RCA connection at 2 V and a balanced XLR connection at 3 V. The balanced output delivers a higher level and reduces cable sensitivity to interference over long runs, which makes sense when the player and amplifier are far apart or in an electrically noisy environment.

Line Magnetic presents the LM-32CD as the source component that complements its own amplifiers, and the matching sonic character works in favor of this pairing. However, nothing prevents it from being connected to another amplification system: its RCA and XLR outputs are universal standards, compatible with the vast majority of integrated amplifiers or preamplifiers on the market.

With its 10 kg weight and full-size dimensions of 43 cm wide, 32.5 cm deep, and 10.5 cm high, the LM-32CD adopts the format of a full-size hi-fi component, easy to place on a piece of furniture or in a rack. This weight reflects solid chassis construction, an important point for a disc player, whose reading mechanism benefits from being isolated from vibrations.
