Fyne Audio F55E (pack of 2)
Overview
Fyne Audio brings its coaxial driver technology to a very compact floorstanding format, barely taking up more space than a bookshelf speaker on a stand. The F55E uses the IsoFlare principle from the Scottish brand’s higher-end models, combined with a dedicated woofer and a downward-firing port with BassTrax diffuser. A 92.5 cm tall cabinet in black ash finish: a floorstander for small rooms without giving up the character of a full-size speaker.
The most compact IsoFlare floorstander
At 92.5 cm tall with a footprint of 21 x 23.6 cm, the F55E takes up no more space than a bookshelf speaker mounted on a heavy stand. It is the smallest floorstanding model with a coaxial driver in the Fyne Audio catalog, completing the F500E series with an intermediate format between the bookshelf F5E and the F501. The Scottish brand, founded in 2017 by former Tannoy engineers including Paul Mills, has continued the development of the point-source coaxial driver across all product ranges.
The IsoFlare coaxial driver
The IsoFlare is a point-source driver: the 19 mm titanium dome tweeter with compression chamber is housed at the center of the 125 mm multifibre cone that covers the midrange. The two sound sources share the same acoustic axis, which time-aligns the midrange and treble and tightens the stereo image. The cone surround uses FyneFlute suspension, whose contours reduce edge resonances and limit coloration. On the F55E, this driver uses the design of the brand’s higher-end models, in a reduced diameter.
BassTrax loading directed toward the floor
Below the IsoFlare sits a second 125 mm multifibre cone driver dedicated to the bass range. The crossover frequency between the two units is 350 Hz (second-order low-pass filter, first-order high-pass), while the crossover between midrange and tweeter is at 1.8 kHz. The bass-reflex port exits under the cabinet, 3.2 cm from the front edge, facing a Tractrix diffuser cone called BassTrax. This device redirects the port’s energy in a 360° pattern around the speaker, making the loading less sensitive to rear wall distance than a conventional rear port. In-room frequency response extends down to 42 Hz at -6 dB.
MDF cabinet and black ash finish
The high-density MDF cabinet features internal bracing and damping, bringing the weight to 11.9 kg: a weight consistent with a floorstanding speaker even in a reduced format. For now, the finish is limited to black ash vinyl, with a full-size fabric grille supplied as standard. The position of the BassTrax cone under the cabinet requires a stable base: the F55E integrates the necessary supports at the bottom to preserve the 3.2 cm clearance provided under the port.
Sensitivity, impedance, and amplifier compatibility
With 88 dB sensitivity at 2.83 V / 1 m, a nominal impedance of 8 Ω, and a recommended power range of 30 to 120 W RMS, the F55E works with modestly powered integrated amplifiers as well as more powerful models. Continuous power handling is 60 W RMS. Its efficiency places it within an accessible range for the vast majority of home transistor amplifiers, with no special current demands.
Placement and in-room listening
The BassTrax diffuser allows for more forgiving placement than a rear-ported floorstander: a few dozen centimeters between the speaker and the rear wall are generally enough to achieve proper tonal balance. However, the directivity of the IsoFlare point-source driver is more pronounced off-axis than that of a conventional separate tweeter and midrange arrangement, particularly around 5 kHz: a slight angle toward the listener (toe-in) is useful to preserve treble on the sofa. Extension down to 42 Hz covers most musical fundamentals without a subwoofer, but integration with a subwoofer remains relevant for home theater, where very low frequency effects exceed the useful range of this cabinet format.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the F55E do without a subwoofer?
For music listening, extension down to 42 Hz (-6 dB) covers almost all acoustic instruments and most of the range of amplified music. For home theater, however, very low frequency effects (LFE channel, infrasound) are well beyond this range: a subwoofer remains relevant as soon as physical deep bass impact is desired, especially in a room larger than 25 m². The crossover is then set between 60 and 80 Hz depending on the room acoustics.
How far from the rear wall should it be placed?
The downward-firing port and BassTrax diffuser make the F55E less sensitive to placement than a rear-ported floorstander. A few dozen centimeters between the rear panel and the wall are generally enough to avoid excessive bass reinforcement. A slight angle toward the listener remains useful to preserve treble, because the directivity of the IsoFlare driver is more pronounced off-axis than a separate driver arrangement.
Which amplifiers does it pair with?
The 88 dB sensitivity and 8 Ω nominal impedance make the F55E undemanding. The full 30 - 120 W RMS range recommended by Fyne Audio is suitable: a quality transistor integrated amplifier in this range, or a tube amplifier above 25 W per channel, is enough to bring out the floorstander’s potential. The quality of the electronics matters more than the raw power shown on the spec sheet.
Is it suitable for a surround system?
The F55E can serve as the front left and right speaker in a 5.1 or 7.1 setup in a moderately sized room. To maintain tonal consistency between channels, Fyne Audio offers the bookshelf F5E in the same series (same drivers) for surround channels, to be complemented by a dedicated center speaker. However, the size of the F55E cabinet limits maximum sound pressure compared with the larger floorstanders in the series.
