The A8 APEX brings back the fundamentals that built Advance Paris’s reputation in a more compact format. This hybrid integrated amplifier combines an ECC81/12AT7 tube preamplifier with a power section delivering 76 W into 8 Ω in Class A/B. This limited 30th Edition in black finish celebrates three decades of French expertise in sound reproduction. The High-Bias mode extends Class A operation over a wider power range, while the ESS Sabre 9018 converter handles digital sources up to DSD128.

A refined hybrid design

The A8 APEX adopts a hybrid configuration that pairs two ECC81/12AT7 tubes for preamplification with a transistorized power stage delivering 76 watts per channel into 8 ohms in Class A/B. The tubes provide the natural harmonic character and organic spatialization sought by music lovers, while the solid-state stage ensures control and stability with complex loads.

A 240 VA toroidal transformer forms the energetic heart of the unit, delivering stable power even during the most demanding dynamic passages. The 10 mm thick black methacrylate front panel conceals, when the unit is off, two analog VU meters that light up in a signature electric blue when powered on. Between these two dials, a central window reveals the preamp tubes, bathed in a gentle amber glow.

High-Bias mode: Class A at the flip of a switch

The High-Bias function sets the A8 APEX apart in its price category. A simple switch doubles the bias of the output transistors, allowing the amplifier to operate in pure Class A over an extended power range. This mode subtly yet noticeably transforms the sonic signature: micro-details gain definition, timbres become richer, and the stereo image acquires remarkable depth.

This ability to switch between two amplification philosophies smartly adapts to different listening contexts. Standard mode suits longer sessions or when musical dynamics call for substantial reserves. High-Bias mode shines during attentive listening moments when every nuance matters.

Comprehensive connectivity

The A8 APEX offers eight analog RCA inputs, including an MM phono input with three capacitance settings to optimize matching with different cartridges. The digital section is built around the ESS Sabre 9018 converter and includes four inputs (one optical, two coaxial, one USB) accepting PCM streams up to 24-bit/192 kHz as well as DSD64 and DSD128 formats.

eARC HDMI integration, rare at this price point, enables seamless integration with modern TVs: the amplifier powers on automatically and volume is controlled via the TV’s remote control. Bluetooth aptX Adaptive connectivity (optional A-BTC module) rounds out the arsenal.

Outputs include a pre-out for adding an external power amp, a subwoofer output for 2.1 setups, a fixed-level record out, and a 12V trigger output. The binding posts accept bare wire, spades, or banana plugs, while a 6.35 mm headphone output completes the front panel.
