Unnu Classic Series Model 12S
Overview
The Unnu Model 12S is a wall-mounted audio-video cabinet measuring 103.4 cm wide and 25.5 cm deep, designed to accommodate soundbars and compact equipment. Handmade in Denmark from MDF, it offers one- or two-compartment configurations and magnetic back plates for cable management. Wood or acoustic fabric door options are available.
The S Series: bringing sound closer to the wall without compromise
Launched in early 2019 with the Model 13S, the Model 12S introduces a new dimension to the Unnu catalog: the S depth for “Shallow.” With an external depth of just 25.5 cm, these models have a clear purpose: enable wall mounting that brings sound closer to the wall while accommodating soundbars and compact systems.
This reduced depth constraint dictates a wall-only design. Unlike other Unnu models compatible with feet, floor stands, or casters, the 12S and 13S can only be wall-mounted. This specialization ensures the necessary stability despite the absence of a fixed back panel—a feature made possible by a specific construction technique developed by the brand. The Model 12S requires the “Wall bracket 2” wall mount, common to the 12S, 120S, 220, and 221 models.
Despite its compact size, the Model 12S offers generous internal space: 162 mm in height and 999 mm of usable width. Internal depth is 150 mm with the back plate in place, or 237 mm if removed for bulkier equipment.
One compartment or two: modularity serving usability
The Model 12S features a retractable center bar that changes how you use the cabinet. In its single-compartment configuration, the full 999 mm width remains available to accommodate even long soundbars. This option frees up space without visually dividing the cabinet.
Deploying the center bar transforms the Model 12S into two independent compartments. Each space then receives its own magnetic back plate, two in total. This separation lets you organize equipment differently: amplifier on one side, network player on the other, or any combination depending on your system. Interior dimensions per compartment (when divided) are 482 mm wide with a depth of 185 mm (with back plate in place).
Both back plates attach magnetically, making them easy to remove for wiring or maintenance. Positioned 5 cm from the wall, they create space for cable routing while preserving the cabinet’s front aesthetics.
MDF and polyurethane: Danish construction under the microscope
Unnu uses 16 mm MDF for all its cabinets, a technical choice also favored for high-end hi-fi speakers. This dense, rigid material provides the stability needed to support the weight of a television above the cabinet without risk of sagging. MDF rigidity also helps minimize unwanted resonances.
The silky matte polyurethane finish offers both durability and elegance. This long-lasting paint resists everyday scratches and maintains its color over time. The hand-applied finish ensures perfectly sealed joints and crisp edges—a level of craftsmanship that sets hand-built furniture apart.
The construction technique deserves attention: Unnu builds stable cabinets without a fixed back panel. This technical achievement relies on specially designed metal angles that reinforce the structure. This method enables removable back plates instead of a permanently screwed panel.
Each cabinet leaves the workshop fully assembled. Accessories like doors are then installed without specialized tools.
Cable management: discreet and accessible
The Model 12S includes two centrally positioned cable pass-throughs: one in the top panel and another in the bottom panel. This vertical layout simplifies routing from equipment to the TV above or to wall outlets below.
The magnetic back plates form the second layer of management. Drilled to allow cables to pass between compartments, they can be removed in seconds to access connections. Once wiring is complete, they snap back magnetically to conceal all cabling. The 5 cm space between these plates and the wall provides sufficient volume to manage multiple power and signal cables without compression.
Doors and finishes: customize appearance and acoustics
The Model 12S can remain open or be fitted with doors, depending on preference. Two types of closures are offered: wood or acoustic fabric.
Wood doors, available in white, black, oak, or walnut, offer full visual concealment. They open downward and completely hide the equipment. This solution requires an infrared extender kit to keep remotes working, as wood blocks the signals.
Acoustic fabric doors solve this technical issue by their very material. The fabric lets both sound and infrared signals pass through. Result: soundbars play without obstruction and remotes work normally with the doors closed. These doors come in several colors—white, black, gray, silver—to blend with interiors. They also open downward on a hinge.
The chassis itself is available in white or black. Oak and walnut finishes apply to the entire chassis, giving the whole cabinet a natural wood look.
Fabric doors cover the full width from edge to edge, even on a cabinet divided into two compartments. This visual continuity avoids the segmented look sometimes seen with juxtaposed modules.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the Model 12S and other Unnu models of similar width?
The Model 12S belongs to the S series, defined by a reduced depth of 25.5 cm versus 36.5 or 45 cm for standard models like the 120S. This shallow depth requires wall mounting only, whereas the 120S accepts feet, stands, and casters. The 12S therefore prioritizes discreet integration and a near-wall installation, while standard models offer more installation versatility.
Can you install a TV above the Model 12S?
The Model 12S is designed to be wall-mounted beneath a TV. The 16 mm MDF used in the cabinet supports the weight without deformation. A centered cable pass-through in the top panel makes it easy to route HDMI cables to the screen. This TV–cabinet–soundbar setup is the typical use case for the Model 12S.
Do fabric doors really affect a soundbar’s sound?
Unnu’s acoustic fabric allows sound to pass without significant attenuation. That’s the primary reason it’s used in hi-fi furniture: to hide speakers while preserving their performance. The same fabric also lets infrared signals through, so remotes continue to work with the doors closed.
How do I choose between the one- or two-compartment configuration?
It depends on your soundbar length and the number of devices to install. A soundbar longer than 482 mm requires the single wide compartment. For multiple compact components (amplifier, network player, game console), splitting into two compartments makes organization easier. The retractable center bar lets you change this configuration even after purchase.
What equipment fits in a Model 12S?
The 162 mm internal height accommodates most soundbars, compact amplifiers, network players, and game consoles. The width is 999 mm (single configuration) or 482 mm (per divided compartment). Depth varies depending on whether you keep or remove the back plates: 150 mm with them, 237 mm without. Unnu provides a PDF manual showing placement examples for different equipment types.
Is the Model 12S supplied with wall mounts?
The base chassis does not include wall mounts, which are a separately ordered accessory. The Model 12S specifically requires the “Wall bracket 2,” compatible with its width. These wall mounts are sold separately and an installation manual is included with delivery. Some Unnu retailers offer professional installation services.
