In an in-wall setup, this prevents every kick drum hit from rattling dishes in adjacent cupboards.

The cones combine paper and aramid fiber, a material B&W has mastered since 1974. This synthetic fiber, known commercially as Kevlar, offers a high stiffness-to-mass ratio while maintaining sufficient internal damping to control resonances. The result: fast, precise bass that can track the most violent transients without collapsing into sonic mush.

The reinforced MDF sealed cabinet, with an internal volume of 22 liters, favors precision over extreme low-end extension. This sealed loading ensures predictable frequency response and natural damping, unlike bass-reflex designs whose behavior can vary with placement. The sub’s 12.5 kg weight attests to solid construction designed to remain inert in the face of the acoustic pressures generated by the drivers.

Acoustic potential unlocked by amplification

The ISW-3 is a passive subwoofer that requires the use of Bowers & Wilkins’ CDA-4D amplifier. This apparent constraint actually reflects a coherent approach: rather than integrating electronics compromised by space and heat constraints, B&W chose to separate the speaker’s motor from its enclosure.

The CDA-4D is a compact 1U distribution amplifier delivering four channels of 125 watts in Class D. Its built-in DSP optimizes the subwoofer’s response based on placement and enables a dynamic EQ that adapts the response curve to listening level. This digital approach ensures the sub remains linear even during demanding orchestral passages or cinematic explosions.

Bridgeable channels provide 250 watts in mono configuration, increasing available power when conditions demand it. The CDA-4D also supports auto turn-on via signal or a 12V trigger, easing integration into home automation systems.

Remarkable installation versatility

The sub’s geometry opens up unusual installation possibilities. With its 330 mm width, 470 mm height, and 235 mm depth, it fits between standard studs spaced 16 inches apart. The required cutout, 334 × 78 mm, minimizes visual impact: only a discreet vent with a paintable white grille remains visible, looking more like an air vent than an audio component.

This discretion allows for traditionally excluded locations: under kitchen kickboards, inside a low cabinet, or even in a bathroom ceiling. Four L-brackets secure the sub regardless of orientation. The paintable grille blends with any decor, disappearing completely after a few coats matched to the surrounding walls.

This ability to adapt to diverse environments without compromising sonic results is the ISW-3’s main asset. It turns architectural constraints into opportunities rather than obstacles.

Acoustic performance and system integration

The usable frequency range spans from 19 Hz (-6 dB) to 400 Hz (-6 dB), with a -3 dB response between 25 Hz and 222 Hz. These figures place the sub in the realm of deep bass, capable of reproducing the fundamentals of a double bass as well as the subsonic effects of an action movie soundtrack.

The nominal impedance of 8 ohms (minimum 6.3 ohms) makes it easy for the CDA-4D amplifier to drive, ensuring stability even during the most demanding passages. The 250-watt power handling aligns precisely with the capabilities of the recommended amplifier, creating a balanced system where neither component limits the other’s performance.

The ISW-3 fits equally well in a multichannel home cinema system or a two-channel hi-fi setup needing low-frequency extension. It integrates naturally with B&W’s Custom Installation in-wall speakers, yet its neutrality allows it to complement other systems without causing tonal discontinuity.
