Final DX3000 CL
Overview
Final introduces a new format in the DX range with the DX3000 CL: a closed-back headphone with a dynamic driver. This wired model, made in Japan, is based on the acoustic approach of the DX6000 while adopting a distinct architecture built around a 40 mm paper-carbon composite diaphragm. Its fiberglass-reinforced resin housing, assembled without glue, combines passive isolation and a sense of space thanks to calibrated acoustic chambers.
An in-house developed paper-carbon composite diaphragm
The DX3000 CL’s 40 mm dynamic driver uses a hybrid diaphragm combining paper and carbon fibers impregnated with resin. This hot-pressed blend aims to strike a balance between rigidity and lightness. Unlike the DX6000, which uses a magnesium alloy diaphragm, the paper‑carbon choice gives the DX3000 CL a different sound signature: the mids are more forward and transients retain an organic texture.
The so‑called “free‑edge surround” structure (free‑edge suspension) limits unwanted resonances while allowing the diaphragm to move precisely. This approach, developed entirely in Final’s Japanese workshops, avoids the frequency colorations often induced by conventional surrounds.
A spider-web diffuser to control the treble
Positioned in front of the driver, a “spider‑web” diffuser acts on high‑frequency behavior. Its individually optimized geometry reduces interferences in the treble range and improves coherence across the entire spectrum. This technical solution avoids artificial peaks or sibilance without resorting to a conventional passive filter.
The housing also incorporates fiberglass diffusion bars that dampen internal resonances. The goal: preserve natural spatiality despite the closed‑back design.
Hybrid earpads and ergonomic fit
The DX3000 CL’s earpads combine synthetic leather and memory foam. Their design provides effective passive isolation while remaining comfortable for eyeglass wearers. These parts are replaceable, which extends the lifespan of the headphone.
The headband distributes pressure evenly across the head, while the clamping force has been calibrated to allow long listening sessions without excessive fatigue. Despite being a closed‑back headphone, the DX3000 CL maintains a surprisingly spacious feel, thanks to the work done on the internal acoustic chambers.
Frequently asked questions
Does the DX3000 CL require a dedicated headphone amplifier?
With a sensitivity of 96 dB/mW and an impedance of 37 Ω, this headphone works properly with a portable DAC or an audiophile player. A desktop amplifier will nonetheless allow you to fully exploit its capabilities, particularly in the bass range and dynamics.
How does it differ from the DX6000?
The DX6000 is an open‑back model equipped with a magnesium diaphragm, designed for “speaker‑like” listening with a very airy soundstage. The DX3000 CL uses a closed‑back design with a paper‑carbon diaphragm, offering passive isolation and more intimate mids. Its impedance and sensitivity also make the DX3000 CL easier to drive.
Are the earpads replaceable?
Yes. The synthetic leather and memory foam earpads can be replaced, helping maintain the headphone’s comfort and hygiene over time.
Can I use a cable with a 3.5 mm plug?
The supplied cable has a 4.4 mm balanced connector, with a 6.3 mm adapter included. For 3.5 mm use, you will need to purchase a compatible cable or an additional adapter.
Is this headphone suitable for studio use?
Its closed‑back design and passive isolation make it a serious candidate for monitoring. Its balanced reproduction and lack of excessive coloration meet professional expectations, although Final primarily positions this model as a hi‑fi listening headphone.
