ArtSound FL620 (pack of 2)
Overview
The FL620 from ArtSound is an in-ceiling speaker. Designed in Belgium, it draws on more than twenty years of the manufacturer’s experience in discreet speaker design.
A frame with millimetre precision
The ABS body of the speaker, with its 230 mm diameter and 75 mm depth, houses a carefully engineered two-way coaxial system. The required 205 mm cut-out makes it easy to integrate into modern suspended ceilings. This structural compactness in no way compromises stability: the integrated vibration absorption system ensures sound reproduction free from unwanted resonances, even at higher listening levels.
The metal grille can be painted to match decorative requirements, allowing it to blend seamlessly with its surroundings. This chromatic adaptability, combined with the thin frame, makes the speaker practically invisible once installed, leaving only the sound quality it delivers to be noticed.
Coaxial acoustic configuration
The FL620 uses a coaxial configuration combining a 6.5-inch carbon-reinforced polypropylene woofer with a 0.5-inch polycarbonate tweeter. This concentric arrangement provides a single-point sound source, eliminating the phase issues commonly found in separated-way systems.
The woofer’s carbon-loaded polypropylene cone is a judicious technical choice. This composite material combines the lightness of polypropylene with the rigidity provided by carbon fibres, creating an optimal balance between moving mass and structural strength. This combination allows the woofer to go down to 70 Hz with minimal distortion, while maintaining precise transient response in the midrange.
The 12.7 mm polycarbonate tweeter, positioned at the centre of the woofer, extends the response up to 20 kHz. Polycarbonate, a thermoplastic polymer known for its hardness and dimensional stability, delivers detailed high frequencies without excessive coloration. This coaxial configuration ensures uniform sound dispersion, especially valuable in multichannel installations where spatial coherence is essential.
With a sensitivity of 90 dB (1W/1m) and a nominal impedance of 8 ohms, the FL620 works well with a wide range of amplifiers, from modest 20-watt units up to the recommended 120 watts. This electrical versatility makes it easy to integrate into existing systems or to create new multiroom installations.
Magnetic installation: speed and precision
The FL620 mounting system reflects the focus on ease of installation. The frame clips into the opening using progressive adjustment screws that allow millimetre-precise setting of the mounting depth. These fixing mechanisms ensure even pressure against the surface, guaranteeing stability and the absence of unwanted vibrations.
The grille attaches magnetically, an elegant solution that eliminates visible screws while allowing quick access to the components if necessary. This precisely calibrated magnetic mounting holds the grille firmly in place while allowing tool-free removal for maintenance or colour customization.
The low weight of 1.20 kg per unit makes handling easier during installation, reducing stress on ceiling structures. This lightness does not compromise robustness: the ABS construction provides mechanical strength suited to residential and commercial environments.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the optimal coverage area of the FL620?
The FL620 effectively covers spaces up to 50 m². This reach allows you to equip medium-sized rooms with a pair of speakers or create multichannel systems in larger areas. The coaxial dispersion ensures even coverage without acoustic dead zones.
Is the FL620 suitable for installation in damp environments?
Although the ABS enclosure offers some resistance to ambient humidity, the FL620 is not specifically designed for very humid environments such as bathrooms. For these applications, choose models with the appropriate IP rating. The speaker is perfectly suitable for standard living spaces with controlled humidity.
How is sound directed with an in-ceiling coaxial speaker?
Unlike directional speakers, the FL620 radiates sound perpendicularly to the ceiling. The coaxial configuration nonetheless offers wide, even dispersion (typically 120–140 degrees) that effectively covers the listening area. To optimise coverage, position the speakers with the main listening zones in mind.
Can the FL620 be used in a home cinema system?
Absolutely. The 8-ohm impedance and 90 dB sensitivity make the FL620 compatible with most home cinema amplifiers. The coaxial configuration provides excellent time alignment, which is particularly beneficial for surround channels where spatial precision is crucial.
What is the difference between carbon-loaded polypropylene and standard polypropylene?
Carbon-loaded polypropylene incorporates carbon fibres into the polymer matrix, significantly increasing cone stiffness without excessively increasing the moving mass. This improvement results in better definition in the low-midrange and reduced distortion at high volume, compared with more flexible pure polypropylene.
Does the wiring require any special precautions?
The FL620 accepts standard speaker cable (14–16 AWG recommended for normal lengths). Connections are made via spring or screw terminals depending on the version. Observe polarity to maintain phase coherence, which is especially important in multi-speaker installations.
How can the grille be painted without affecting acoustic performance?
Remove the grille magnetically before painting. Use spray paint applied in thin coats to avoid blocking the perforations. The grille must be completely dry before reassembly. Careful application preserves acoustic transparency while customising the visual appearance.
