The Sonance VP6SQ is an adapter kit designed to transform the appearance of round 6” Visual Performance in-wall/in-ceiling speakers into a square format. Sold in pairs, this kit includes two adapters and two paintable square grilles, allowing you to match your ceiling speakers with other architectural elements in your interior, such as spotlights or air vents.
Design and materials of the VP6SQ
The VP6SQ adapter is made up of two distinct elements: a metal and plastic adapter frame, and a square micro-perforated grille. This combination of materials ensures a durable and reliable construction.
The outer dimensions of the assembly are 250 x 250 mm, with a thickness of only about 6.6 mm. This slim profile allows the adapter to remain discreet once installed, with minimal visual impact. The grille has a matte white finish, ready for custom painting.
The paintable white finish lets you customize the grille to any color and ensures long-term use. This customization option is particularly valuable when ceilings or walls are not white, providing a truly invisible integration.
Compatibility with Sonance speakers
The VP6SQ is designed exclusively for round speakers in the Visual Performance range featuring a 6” (15 cm) woofer. Compatible models include the VP60R, VP62R, VP64R, VP66R, VP68R, and MAG6R.
One important point to note: speakers from the new Visual Experience (VX) range are not compatible with this adapter. The design and dimensions of VX speakers differ from those of the Visual Performance series, making adaptation impossible. If you are considering an upgrade to the Visual Experience range, check the specific accessories available for that series.
Installation: the Roto-Lock system
Installation of the VP6SQ relies on Sonance’s patented Roto-Lock system, which equips all Visual Performance speakers. The square adapter with its grille is inserted from behind the round speaker before it is installed in the ceiling.
The process is as follows:
- Insert the speaker into the round ceiling cutout and lightly tighten the Roto-Lock clamps
- Align the square adapter with the other ceiling elements (spotlights, air vents, etc.)
- Once alignment is correct, fully tighten the Roto-Lock clamps with low torque and attach the magnetic grille
The adapter features small screw holes that allow it to be secured more firmly when dealing with heavily textured ceilings, keeping the corners perfectly flat. The necessary screws and wall plugs are not supplied, as they are not required in most installations.
Customization through painting
Visual Performance grilles completely cover the speaker frame, meaning that only the grilles (and not the speakers themselves) need to be painted.
Before painting, carefully remove the acoustic fabric attached to the back of the grille using a hair dryer or heat gun to soften the glue. Sonance recommends using a water-based latex paint, diluted at a 1:1 ratio with a suitable thinning agent. A small touch-up spray gun or a cap spray gun with a No. 3 nozzle gives the best results.
If any grille perforations become clogged with paint after drying, you can gently clear them with a pin or sewing needle. Once the paint is dry, replace the acoustic fabric on the back of the grille before final installation.
