Russound SMZ-8

Russound launches the SMZ-8, succeeding the MCA-88 in its range of multiroom controllers. This audio hub combines high-resolution streaming, Class D amplification and advanced DSP processing in a 19-inch rack format. The SMZ-8 incorporates a streaming platform developed in-house by Russound, providing access to popular music services via AirPlay, Google Cast and Spotify Connect. The 8-source/8-zone architecture can be expanded to up to 48 networked zones, with six amplified channels delivering 50 watts per channel and two line outputs for external amplification.

More powerful amplification than the previous generation

The MCA-88 delivered 40 watts per channel and was not stable at 4 ohms, limiting speaker options. The SMZ-8 delivers 50 watts per channel at 8 ohms and 100 watts at 4 ohms, thanks to separate Class D amplifiers for each of the six amplified zones. This 4-ohm stability allows two pairs of 8-ohm speakers to be connected per amplified zone, thereby doubling installation possibilities. Zones 7 and 8 feature variable or fixed line outputs, making it easy to add external amplifiers for outdoor spaces or large rooms requiring more power. Russound also offers D Series amplifiers (D890, D1290, D1675) that pair naturally with these line outputs.

High-resolution streaming and comprehensive connectivity

The built-in streamer supports 192 kHz/24-bit files, based on the same architecture as Russound’s MBX-PRE and MBX-AMP players. The unit supports both local files via the USB-C port (USB drive or external hard drive) and streams from Spotify, Deezer, Tidal and other platforms. Physical connectivity includes 8 analog RCA inputs, 3 optical inputs, 2 coaxial inputs, one HDMI ARC input and one USB-C input. All eight analog inputs include signal detection that automatically activates the corresponding zone when an audio signal is received. Dual-band Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) complements Ethernet, although Russound recommends a wired connection for reliability. A built-in 2-port Ethernet switch saves a network port by allowing a second device to be connected in daisy-chain.

Latency-free audio-video synchronization

The HDMI ARC input lets you connect a TV and distribute its audio to all zones without lip-sync delay. This function is particularly useful for broadcasting a sporting event in several rooms simultaneously. CEC controls allow the SMZ-8 volume to be controlled directly from the TV remote when the main zone is configured in the Web Config interface. Synchronization between zones is achieved with minimal latency simply by selecting the same source from several rooms, working with up to 48 zones in an expanded configuration.

DSP processing and parametric equalization

The 7-band parametric graphic equalizer includes presets optimized for Russound speakers, speeding up initial setup. The Russound app (iOS and Android) provides access to full parametric equalization, an extensive library of speaker presets and a pink noise generator for calibrating each zone. These fine adjustments compensate for the specific acoustics of each room, from the living room to the kitchen and outdoor spaces. Settings are stored independently for each zone, allowing sound performance to be optimized according to the characteristics of the space and installed speakers.

Modularity and expansion to 48 zones

Up to six SMZ-8 units can be connected to the same network to create an 8-source/48-zone system. Each controller communicates seamlessly with the others, requiring only audio source expansion rather than duplication. Each internal streamer has its own default source number based on the controller identification switch, resolving a limitation of the MCA-88X that prevented all streamers from being used in a multi-unit installation. This network architecture offers installation flexibility across several floors or in large properties, with each SMZ-8 placed wherever wiring allows. Analog loop outputs also make it possible to share audio sources between several controllers.

Mobile app and wall controllers

The Russound app centralizes management of all zones and sources. It displays track metadata, manages playback functions, adjusts equalization and configures alarm or sleep timers. XTS7 wall keypads (color touchscreen) and IPK-1 (simple IP keypad) provide dedicated control points in every room, avoiding the need to find your phone to change volume or source. Standard features include party modes, alarm and sleep timers, do-not-disturb zone designation, source and zone linking, all-on/all-off participation, and other zone-by-zone configurable personalization settings.

Installation by certified integrators

The SMZ-8 is supplied in a locked state and requires authentication with valid Russound Certified Installer credentials via the Web Config utility or mobile app. This restriction ensures that only trained professionals configure the unit, ensuring optimal installation and programming. The RCI (Russound Certified Installer) program establishes a network of authorized dealers and installers proficient in the Russound ecosystem. The 19-inch rack chassis integrates easily into technical racks or can be placed on a shelf using the supplied mounting brackets. Removable 4-pin euroblock speaker connectors accept cables up to 12 AWG.

Long-range Bluetooth extension

Bluetooth range can be extended by 500 feet via the BTC-2X module or BSK-2 kit, allowing the Bluetooth receiver to be placed near the listening area rather than at the SMZ-8 in the technical rack. This configuration is particularly useful for remote outdoor spaces such as a pool or patio. The SMZ-8 simultaneously handles multiple Bluetooth inputs, a rare capability on the market. A user can stream music via Bluetooth in the kitchen while a guest does the same by the pool, each with their own stream and playback controls.
