Russound SMZ-8
Overview
Russound is launching the SMZ-8, the successor to the MCA-88 in its range of multiroom controllers. This audio hub combines high‑resolution streaming, class D amplification, and advanced DSP processing in a 19‑inch rack format. The SMZ-8 incorporates a streaming platform developed in‑house by Russound, providing access to popular music services via AirPlay, Google Cast, and Spotify Connect. The 8‑source/8‑zone architecture can be expanded up to 48 networked zones, with six amplified channels delivering 50 watts per channel and two line outputs for external amplification.
More powerful amplification than the previous generation
The MCA-88 delivered 40 watts per channel and was not stable at 4 ohms, limiting speaker options. The SMZ-8 delivers 50 watts per channel at 8 ohms and 100 watts at 4 ohms, thanks to separate class D amplifiers for each of the six amplified zones. This 4‑ohm stability allows you to connect two pairs of 8‑ohm speakers per amplified zone, effectively doubling installation possibilities. Zones 7 and 8 feature variable or fixed line‑level outputs, making it easy to add external amplifiers for outdoor areas or large rooms that require more power. Russound’s D‑series amplifiers (D890, D1290, D1675) are designed to pair naturally with these line outputs.
High‑resolution streaming and comprehensive connectivity
The built‑in streamer supports 192 kHz/24‑bit files, based on the same architecture as Russound’s MBX-PRE and MBX-AMP players. The unit handles both local files via USB‑C port (USB drive or external hard drive) and streams from Spotify, Deezer, Tidal, and other platforms. Physical connectivity includes 8 analog RCA inputs, 3 optical inputs, 2 coaxial inputs, one HDMI ARC input, and one USB‑C input. The eight analog inputs include signal sensing that automatically activates the corresponding zone when an audio signal is detected. Dual‑band Wi‑Fi 5 (802.11ac) complements Ethernet, although Russound recommends a wired connection for reliability. A built‑in 2‑port Ethernet switch saves a network port by allowing a second device to be daisy‑chained.
Zero‑latency audio‑video sync
The HDMI ARC input lets you connect a TV and distribute its audio to all zones without lip‑sync delay. This is particularly useful for broadcasting a sports event in several rooms at once. CEC commands allow you to control the SMZ-8 volume directly from the TV remote when the main zone is configured in the Web Config interface. Zone‑to‑zone synchronization is achieved with minimal latency simply by selecting the same source from multiple rooms, and works across up to 48 zones in an expanded configuration.
DSP processing and parametric equalization
The 7‑band parametric graphic equalizer includes presets optimized for Russound speakers, speeding up initial setup. The Russound app (iOS and Android) provides access to full parametric EQ, an extensive library of speaker presets, and a pink noise generator for calibrating each zone. These fine adjustments compensate for the specific acoustics of each room, from the living room to the kitchen and outdoor spaces. Settings are stored independently for each zone, allowing you to optimize sound according to the characteristics of the space and the installed speakers.
Modularity and expansion up to 48 zones
Up to six SMZ-8 units can be connected on the same network to create an 8‑source/48‑zone system. Each controller communicates seamlessly with the others, so you only need to extend the audio sources, not duplicate them. Each internal streamer has its own default source number based on the controller’s ID switch, solving a limitation of the MCA-88X which did not allow all streamers to be used in a multi‑unit installation. This network architecture offers flexible deployment across multiple floors or large properties, with each SMZ-8 positioned wherever cabling allows. Analog loop outputs also make it possible to share audio sources between multiple controllers.
Mobile app and in‑wall controllers
The Russound app centralizes management of all zones and sources. It displays track metadata, controls playback functions, adjusts EQ, and configures wake and sleep timers. The XTS7 (color touchscreen) and IPK-1 (simple IP keypad) in‑wall keypads provide dedicated control points in each room, so you don’t have to look for your phone to change volume or source. Standard features include party modes, alarm and sleep timers, do‑not‑disturb zone designation, linking of sources and zones, participation in all‑on/all‑off commands, and other customization options configurable on a per‑zone basis.
Installation by certified integrators
The SMZ-8 ships in a locked state and requires authentication with valid Russound Certified Installer credentials via the Web Config utility or mobile app. This ensures that only trained professionals configure the device, guaranteeing optimal installation and programming. The 19‑inch rack chassis fits easily into equipment racks or can be shelf‑mounted using the supplied brackets. Removable 4‑pin euroblock speaker connectors accept cables up to 12 AWG.
Long‑range Bluetooth extension
Bluetooth range can be extended up to 500 feet using the BTC-2X module or BSK-2 kit, allowing the Bluetooth receiver to be placed near the listening area rather than at the SMZ-8 in the equipment rack. This is particularly useful for remote outdoor spaces such as a pool or terrace. The SMZ-8 can manage multiple Bluetooth inputs simultaneously, a rare capability on the market. One user can stream music via Bluetooth in the kitchen while a guest does the same by the pool, each with their own stream and playback controls.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I connect 4‑ohm speakers to each amplified zone?
Yes, the SMZ-8 is stable at 4 ohms. Each amplified zone accepts either one pair of 4‑ohm speakers or two pairs of 8‑ohm speakers. The euroblock connectors support cables up to 12 AWG to minimize losses.
Zones 7 and 8 are not amplified: how do I use them?
These two zones provide stereo RCA line outputs configurable as fixed or variable level. They are intended for large spaces that require more power (terraces, patios) or for powered speakers. Russound D‑series amplifiers (D890, D1290, D1675) pair naturally with these outputs.
Can I use Wi‑Fi instead of a wired Ethernet connection?
Dual‑band Wi‑Fi 5 (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) is fully functional, although Russound favors Ethernet for stability. The SMZ-8 also includes a 2‑port Ethernet switch to connect a second network device without using an extra port on the router.
How does the 48‑zone expansion work with multiple SMZ-8 units?
Up to six SMZ-8 controllers on the same network share eight common audio sources. Each controller has a unique ID (via ID switch) and communicates seamlessly with the others. The internal streamers each retain their own source number, solving a limitation of previous controllers.
Is the SMZ-8 compatible with third‑party home automation controllers?
Drivers for Control4, URC, and RTI are in the process of certification. The SMZ-8 also includes an RS‑232 port, IR outputs (4 discrete + 1 global), and 12 V triggers for integration into broader home automation systems. Russound’s RIO API facilitates integration with Russound keypads and controllers.
What is the main difference compared to the MCA-88 it replaces?
The MCA-88 delivered 40 watts per channel, was not stable at 4 ohms, included no built‑in streamer or HDMI ARC input, and had no DSP processing. The SMZ-8 offers 50 watts (100 watts at 4 ohms), high‑resolution streaming, HDMI ARC input, 7‑band parametric EQ, Wi‑Fi 5, and a USB‑C port.
Can I mix an SMZ-8 with an older MCA-88 in my installation?
No, the SMZ-8 cannot be combined with MCA-66 or MCA-88 controllers. Multi‑controller installations must use SMZ-8 units exclusively. However, MBX-PRE players and MBX-AMP amplifiers can be added as independent zones, with some restrictions on source sharing (except via AirPlay or Google Cast).
Does the mobile app provide full system control?
The Russound app (free on iOS and Android) provides access to all functions: source selection, playback control, volume adjustment, graphic and parametric EQ, speaker presets, zone configuration, timers, and alarms. It also displays full metadata for the tracks being played. To obtain the SMZ-8’s IP address from the app, simply press and hold the settings icon for a few seconds.
