A diaphragm that redefines sonic responsiveness

The fourth-generation RP driver marks a break in the approach to audio reproduction. Unlike traditional dynamic drivers, this full planar diaphragm vibrates across its entire surface thanks to a copper trace that runs through the whole polyimide film. This design allows the diaphragm to move in perfectly synchronized fashion, hence the name “Regular Phase.” Fostex engineers have revised the distribution of the magnetic flux by increasing the number of neodymium magnets that clamp the diaphragm, while redesigning the pattern of the printed coils. This technical evolution results in a notable reduction of unwanted resonances and exceptionally fast high-frequency response. Transients gain in definition, the soundstage in coherence, and source localization reaches a level of precision that few dynamic-driver headphones can match.

Black walnut as an acoustic ally

The choice of solid black walnut for the cups is far from a mere aesthetic decision. The independent left-right connection via 3.5 mm mini-jack on each cup opens the door to multiple configurations. The standard 2-meter Y-cable uses high-purity OFC copper conductors to preserve signal integrity. This architecture not only allows for easy replacement in case of wear, but also enables the use of optional balanced cables for high-end audio setups. Users equipped with amplifiers featuring a 4.4 mm balanced output will thus be able to fully exploit the potential of the driver by further improving channel separation and overall dynamics.

Ergonomics designed for long sessions

The low-resilience circumaural earpads conform to the shape of the ear without exerting excessive pressure. Their soft leatherette covering allows for prolonged wear while maintaining good passive isolation. The adjustable leather headband distributes the headphone’s 360 grams evenly over the head, reducing pressure points. This relatively low weight for a planar-magnetic headphone contributes to comfort during listening or work sessions that stretch over several hours.
