With its exclusive drivers and ultra-lightweight design, this open-back headphone marks a turning point in the Japanese manufacturer’s Air Dynamic series. The ATH-AD2000X succeeds the ATH-AD2000 with a complete overhaul of the acoustic system and chassis, while preserving the brand’s characteristic sound DNA: airy reproduction, crystal-clear highs, and a particularly wide soundstage. The model is Hi-Res Audio certified thanks to a frequency response that extends up to 45 kHz.

A driver developed specifically for this model

The acoustic heart of the ATH-AD2000X is based on 53 mm drivers designed exclusively for this headset. The magnetic circuit uses Permendur, an iron-cobalt alloy in equal parts, known for its particularly high magnetic permeability. This property improves driver efficiency and broadens the range of sound reproduction.

The voice coils are made of 7N OFC copper, i.e. oxygen-free copper with 99.99999% purity. This level of refinement in conductive materials is intended to reduce micro-distortions and preserve signal transparency. The whole provides a sensitivity of 103 dB/mW at 40 Ω impedance, making the headphone compatible with a wide range of sources, from dedicated amplifiers to high-resolution portable players.

D.A.D.S.: an acoustic system for controlled bass

Open-back headphones traditionally face a physical challenge: the lack of rear isolation makes low-frequency reproduction more difficult. Audio-Technica has developed the D.A.D.S. (Double Air Damping System) to address this constraint. This device acts on the airflow inside the earcup and increases acoustic pressure in the bass range without sacrificing the natural openness of the design.

Compared to its predecessor, the ATH-AD2000X also incorporates a new finned baffle that optimizes airflow. The cable connection point has been repositioned so that sound radiates 360° around the driver, contributing to a more even soundstage.

Magnesium structure and honeycomb grille

Light weight is one of this headphone’s main assets: just 265 grams on the scale. This result comes from the use of a magnesium alloy for the structural parts and a honeycomb-structured aluminum grille for the housings. This configuration combines mechanical rigidity and low mass, limiting unwanted vibrations while allowing air to flow freely through the earcups.

The open-back design implies virtually no sound isolation in either direction: sound leaks outwards and ambient noise enters the earcups. This headphone therefore naturally finds its place in a quiet environment, for extended home listening sessions.

Redesigned 3D Wing system

Audio-Technica has abandoned the traditional headband in favor of the 3D Wing system, two spring-loaded wings that rest on either side of the skull and automatically adapt to the user’s head shape. This approach eliminates pressure on the top of the head, which is often responsible for discomfort during long listening sessions.

On the ATH-AD2000X, the wings have been redesigned compared to the previous model: the memory alloy headband, considered too rigid, has been replaced by a more flexible stainless steel structure. The earpads use slow-recovery memory foam covered with a soft synthetic velour. Their thickness has been increased to prevent the ear from coming into contact with the driver grille.

Four-conductor cabling

The 3-meter dual-sided cable uses a four-conductor architecture with separate grounds for the left and right channels. This configuration reduces crosstalk between channels and improves stereo imaging precision. The main conductor is made of PCOCC (Pure Copper Ohno Continuous Cast) copper, a manufacturing process that produces single-crystal copper wire, reducing internal junctions that could degrade the signal.

The cable terminates in a gold-plated 3.5 mm mini-jack plug, supplied with a screw-on 6.3 mm jack adapter. The cable is not detachable, which can be a drawback in the event of damage or for users wishing to experiment with alternative cables.

Sound signature and listening contexts

With a stated frequency response of 5 Hz to 45 kHz, the ATH-AD2000X largely covers the audible spectrum and extends into both infrasound and ultrasound. This extension makes it possible to fully exploit high-resolution recordings, where harmonics beyond 20 kHz contribute to the texture and realism of the sound.

The headphone’s sound signature is characterized by lively, detailed highs, sometimes described as “metallic” or “bright.” The mids are expressive, with forward vocals that particularly suit vocal recordings and acoustic music. The bass, reinforced by the D.A.D.S. system, remains controlled rather than generous: priority is given to definition rather than physical impact.

This sound profile works particularly well with classical music, jazz, solo voices, and productions where spatialization and clarity take precedence over bass power. Electronic music or bass-heavy rock may feel a bit light compared to closed-back headphones or models with a warmer tonality.
