It uses the coaxial configuration that has proven its worth for the Belgian manufacturer, with an intermediate 13.3 cm driver diameter that strikes a balance between sonic presence and visual discretion. Sold in pairs, the MDC501 is designed for home or professional installations where budget is a constraint, without sacrificing acoustic coherence.

A compact coaxial design

The two-way system places the 1.3 cm tweeter directly in the centre of the 13.3 cm woofer, a layout that promotes coherent sound dispersion along the listening axis. The woofer uses a carbon-reinforced polypropylene cone, a rigid and lightweight material that limits distortion during cone excursion. The polycarbonate tweeter handles high frequencies up to 20 kHz.

This configuration allows the speaker to extend down to 85 Hz, which is enough to reproduce most of the musical spectrum without a subwoofer in smaller rooms. For deeper bass or higher listening levels, adding a subwoofer is still recommended.

A small 20 or 30-watt-per-channel amplifier is sufficient for background listening in an office or kitchen, while a more powerful model will more easily cover a living room or meeting room.

Connection is via spring clip terminals that accept bare wire, a simple and reliable solution. In multizone installations, several pairs can be wired in parallel on the same amplifier channel, provided you respect the minimum impedance supported by the amplifier.

Coverage and recommended placement

ArtSound specifies a coverage area of under 40 m² for a pair of MDC501s. This estimate corresponds to ambient music playback at moderate levels. For larger rooms or home cinema setups requiring higher sound pressure, moving up to the MDC620 model with its 16.5 cm woofer or adding extra pairs of speakers is more appropriate.

The ideal positioning depends on the room geometry and intended use. For background sound, evenly spacing the speakers ensures homogeneous coverage. For more traditional stereo listening, placing the speakers and listening position at the corners of an equilateral triangle yields better soundstage results.
