A pair of speakers in the ceiling or in a wall, with no external amplifier and no cables running across the room: that’s what the FL101 BT offers. This active version of the FL101 from Belgian manufacturer ArtSound directly integrates its Class D amplification and a Bluetooth receiver, allowing you to sound an entire room from a simple smartphone. The Flat range it comes from stands out for its ultra-thin finishes, designed to blend into the decor.

A ready-to-use active/passive system

The FL101 BT comes as a complete kit including two speakers: one active, the other passive. The active speaker houses the 2 × 45 W Class D amplifier as well as the Bluetooth module; the passive speaker is simply connected to it with a standard speaker cable. This architecture avoids the need to buy a separate amp while preserving true stereo sound.

Class D amplification was chosen for its high efficiency and low heat dissipation, two valuable qualities in a recessed enclosure where ventilation is limited. With 88 dB sensitivity and an impedance of 8 ohms, the speakers deliver a comfortable sound level without overtaxing the power stage.

Coaxial design and pivoting tweeter

Each speaker is based on a two-way coaxial transducer. The 133 mm mid-bass driver uses a composite carbon and polypropylene cone, a choice that combines rigidity and lightness for low frequencies extending down to 65 Hz. At the center of this woofer, a 12.7 mm polycarbonate dome tweeter handles the highs up to 20 kHz.

The advantage of the coaxial configuration lies in the coherence of the sound dispersion: since both transducers radiate from the same point, the sound remains uniform regardless of the listener’s position in the room. In addition, the tweeter can pivot on its axis, allowing you to direct the high frequencies toward the main listening area when the speaker is installed around the perimeter of the ceiling.

Visual discretion and architectural integration

ArtSound’s Flat range is built around a simple principle: minimize visible bulk once the speaker is installed. The FL101 BT features a frame only 1 mm wide and a metal grille 4 mm thick. For a square speaker measuring 170 mm a side, the result is a remarkably discreet visual presence.

The ABS chassis provides good vibration damping, while the aluminum grille can be painted to match the color of the ceiling or wall. Each speaker weighs less than one kilogram, which makes handling easier during installation and limits mechanical stress on the mounting surfaces.

Installation accessible to DIYers

Recessed mounting requires a square cut-out measuring 148 mm per side and a clearance depth of at least 70 mm. These dimensions remain compatible with most suspended ceilings made of plasterboard, wood panels, or MDF. A mounting system using suspension brackets and clamping screws holds the speaker in place without specialized tools.

The electrical connection is limited to three steps: power the active speaker from the mains, connect it to the passive speaker with a speaker cable, then pair the Bluetooth with the desired source device. A 3.5 mm mini-jack auxiliary input offers a wired alternative for devices without Bluetooth, such as some MP3 players or televisions.

Versatile use and sound coverage

ArtSound indicates a coverage area of less than 50 m², which is suitable for a living room, bedroom, office, or medium-sized commercial space. The 65 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response covers the bulk of the musical spectrum with solid bass presence, although deep-bass enthusiasts should consider adding a subwoofer.

Bluetooth connectivity simplifies everyday use: streaming a playlist from a smartphone, providing sound for a presentation from a tablet, or accompanying a video projector becomes a matter of seconds. In professional settings — waiting rooms, shops, restaurants — this ease of connection significantly reduces setup and handover time.
