ArtSound RE2040 (pack of 2)
Overview
A 1 mm-thick grille, a frame that doesn’t exceed 5 mm once the speaker is in place: the RE2040 belongs to ArtSound’s Intiimi range, whose Finnish name evokes purity. The result of more than two years of development by the Belgian brand, this rectangular 2-way model focuses on near-invisible integration into walls or ceilings, without sacrificing sound reproduction quality.
Extreme discretion
The RE2040’s first strength lies in its ability to disappear visually. The ultra-fine mesh metal grille sits almost flush with the wall, with a total protrusion of less than 5 mm after installation. This minimal profile allows the speaker to fade into any interior, whether it’s a contemporary living room, an open kitchen, or a hallway. The grille can also be repainted to match the exact color of the surrounding wall or ceiling.
For installations where even this slight protrusion would be too much, ArtSound offers a dedicated flush-mount kit (FLKIT RE2040) that allows the speaker to be integrated perfectly flush with the surface. The grille and the wall then form a single plane, with no perceptible difference in level.
One-piece construction and vibration control
The RE2040’s structure is molded in a single ABS piece, encompassing both the front plate and the speaker chassis. This one-piece design ensures high rigidity and eliminates unwanted vibrations that could color the sound or create undesirable resonances. The fine mesh of the metal grille has been designed to let sound waves pass through without alteration, while providing effective protection against dust.
Weighing only 1.2 kg per speaker and with an installation depth of 70 mm, it can be fitted into most standard partition walls. The 195 × 125 mm rectangular cutout makes preparation work easier.
Carefully selected drivers for a balanced sound
The RE2040’s 2-way system combines a 10 cm (4-inch) mid-bass driver with a neodymium magnet and a 25 mm titanium-dome tweeter, also fitted with a neodymium magnet. This tweeter benefits from a specific suspension patented by ArtSound and has the advantage of being adjustable: the treble can be directed toward the main listening area, which significantly improves sound coherence when the speaker is installed high up or off-axis relative to the listener.
A level control knob allows you to adjust the tweeter output according to the room’s acoustics and listening preferences. In a reverberant environment or with highly reflective walls, a slight reduction in treble can soften the sound without requiring additional acoustic treatment.
Crossover and signal processing
The Intiimi series incorporates a two-stage crossover network. A crossover filter splits the frequencies precisely between the woofer and the tweeter, while a correction filter fine-tunes the overall response curve. This dual processing of the signal provides a consistent sound across the entire spectrum, with a smooth transition between the low-mid and high registers.
The frequency response ranges from 60 Hz to 20 kHz. The low end is naturally limited by the modest diameter of the driver: for music listening with greater bass depth, adding a subwoofer will be a useful complement.
Amplification and implementation
With a sensitivity of 84 dB and an impedance from 4 to 8 ohms, the RE2040 accepts amplification between 20 and 120 watts. It can therefore be used with a small integrated amplifier as well as with a dedicated power amp. Its ability to cover rooms of up to 40 m² makes it a relevant choice for standard living spaces, in both stereo and multiroom setups.
In-wall installation is the most common for this rectangular format, but nothing prevents ceiling mounting if the room layout calls for it. In all cases, the adjustable tweeter allows you to adapt directivity to the chosen location.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the RE2040 be installed in a damp room such as a bathroom?
The RE2040 is not certified for damp environments. Its ABS chassis and metal grille do not receive any specific treatment against humidity. For a bathroom or a covered outdoor space, it’s better to opt for the waterproof models in the ArtSound range.
What type of amplifier is suitable for these speakers?
Any amplifier capable of delivering between 20 and 120 watts into 4 to 8 ohms will do the job. A standard hi-fi amp, a home cinema receiver, or a multizone amplifier can all drive the RE2040 correctly. The 84 dB sensitivity simply means you’ll need a bit more power to reach high listening levels than with a more sensitive speaker.
Can the grille really be painted without affecting the sound?
Yes, the ultra-fine mesh of the metal grille has been designed to withstand a light coat of paint. A thin layer of acrylic or latex paint will not significantly alter acoustic dispersion. However, thick or textured paints that could clog the mesh should be avoided.
What’s the difference compared with the RO2040 and SQ2040 models in the same series?
These three models share the same drivers and build quality but differ in shape. The RE2040 is rectangular, the SQ2040 is square, and the RO2040 is round. The choice mainly depends on the desired aesthetics and installation constraints. The round RO2040 version uses a coaxial driver, which can slightly alter sound dispersion.
