Overview

What the press says

Sony's fundamental character – energetic, forward and rhythmically sure-footed – is made immediately obvious. [...] In ultimate terms the PS-LX5BT overstates the lowest frequencies in a recording, but it's never bloated or draggy at the bottom of the frequency range. [...] At the top of the frequency range, though, the PS-LX5BT changes its tune just a little. There's still detail revealed and a definite sense of energy at the top end, but treble sounds are a little insubstantial in comparison with the rest of the frequency range and can, in extremis, sound a touch splashy. [...] Despite its little inconsistencies where outright sound quality is concerned, I'm nevertheless startled at just how accomplished and easy to live with this turntable is.
The PS-LXB5T is an excellent do-it-all turntable.[...] It’s well made and reasonably substantial, but this is clearly a turntable that’s been designed for usability first and aesthetics second.[...] Still, we do have a few very minor quibbles.[...] More purist alternatives, such as the Rega Planar 1 Plus, will reward you with a more musical, engaging sound and, to our eyes, a more attractive design.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the PS-LX5BT cartridge be replaced with another model?

The MM cartridge is removable and mounted on a standard headshell. Technically, it can be replaced with a compatible cartridge, even though Sony does not provide detailed documentation on this point. The tonearm does not have counterweight or anti‑skating adjustments, which limits the choice to cartridges that work with a tracking force close to 2 g.

Which Bluetooth codec delivers the best audio quality with this turntable?

aptX Adaptive is the highest‑performance codec available on the PS-LX5BT. It requires compatible headphones or speakers. If aptX Adaptive is not supported, the connection falls back to standard aptX or SBC, with lower audio quality.

Can the PS-LX5BT be used without the built-in preamplifier?

The Phono/Line switch allows you to bypass the preamplifier. In Phono position, the signal is output at phono level (2.5 mV) and requires an amplifier with a phono input or an external preamplifier.

Does the turntable work with records of all sizes?

The PS-LX5BT plays 33 rpm LPs (30 cm) and 45 rpm records (17 cm or 30 cm). An adapter for 45s with a large centre hole is included. 78 rpm records are not supported.

Can the dust cover remain in place while playing?

The cover is designed to be removed during listening. It can stay closed, but some purists prefer to remove it to avoid potential resonances from the plastic.

What is the power consumption of the PS-LX5BT?

The turntable consumes 1.8 W in operation and automatically switches to low-power mode when stopped. The power supply accepts voltages from 100 to 240 V (50/60 Hz).

How is Bluetooth pairing performed?

A dedicated button on the chassis activates pairing mode. The turntable can store multiple devices and automatically reconnects to the last device used.
