Overview

A discreet on-wall 3-speaker configuration in a 40 cm format: that’s what German manufacturer Canton offers with its InWall 845 LCR. The LCR (Left/Center/Right) label indicates that this speaker can take on different roles in a home theater system, whether it’s used as the left, center, or right channel. With its two 135 mm woofers flanking a pivoting tweeter, it follows an architecture similar to traditional center speakers, but in a chassis designed to disappear into the wall.

A three-way configuration in just 7 cm depth

The InWall 845 LCR uses a classic layout: two 135 mm (a little over 5 inches) woofer/midrange drivers frame a 25 mm soft aluminum dome tweeter. This so-called “D’Appolito” configuration ensures even sound dispersion, with a well-focused stereo image or dialogue center, depending on how it’s used.

The woofer cones are made of aluminum, a material Canton widely uses in its traditional ranges. Light and rigid, it promotes fast response and low coloration. The stated frequency response ranges from 42 Hz to 40,000 Hz, placing this speaker at the high end of its category. It won’t replace a subwoofer, but it goes low enough to reproduce male voices and cinematic effects with weight and presence.

The crossover filter kicks in at 2,800 Hz. This relatively high crossover point lets the woofers cover most of the midrange spectrum, while the tweeter focuses on high frequencies. With a sensitivity of 89 dB (measured at 2.83 V / 1 m) and a nominal impedance of 8 ohms, the InWall 845 LCR can be driven easily by most home theater amplifiers on the market.

An adjustable tweeter to suit the room

The tweeter rotates on its axis, allowing you to direct the highs toward the listening area even when the speaker is installed off-axis. Canton also includes a high-frequency level adjustment via a small switch accessible from the front baffle. This feature compensates for the acoustic properties of the room: a heavily furnished living room will absorb more high frequencies than a room with bare walls. The adjustment saves you from having to tweak the amplifier’s equalizer separately for each speaker.

Wall installation and integration

The speaker measures 40 cm high by 19 cm wide, with a total depth of 7.5 cm. The actual mounting depth is 6.8 cm, so you need a partition wall or cladding at least this thick to house the chassis. Canton specifies a maximum panel thickness of 4 cm for the supplied mounting brackets, which corresponds to standard plasterboard (BA13, BA18) with doubling.

The required cut-out measures 36.2 x 15.2 cm. The speaker is secured with fold-out clamps that grip the panel from the inside, a common system for installation speakers. Canton’s “Easy-Link” connectors on the rear accept bare wire without tools: push in, release, and it’s locked.

The metal grille is magnetically attached. It can be painted to blend into the wall, provided you use matte paint and apply thin coats so as not to block the perforations. Canton also offers an optional mounting frame (reference ER 4 LCR) for installations in solid masonry walls or when you want to prepare the opening before putting up the panels.

Real-world uses: from stereo to multichannel

In a 5.1 or larger home theater system, the InWall 845 LCR naturally serves as the center speaker, responsible for reproducing dialogue. Its 40 cm width allows it to fit under a wall-mounted flat screen without sticking out. It can also be used as the left and right front speakers, installed on either side of the screen, for a fully integrated front stage.

In a pure stereo setup, two InWall 845 LCRs can equip an office or bedroom where you don’t want visible speakers. The power handling (70 W continuous, 140 W peak) is sufficient to fill medium-sized rooms. Larger rooms or higher listening levels will place greater demands on the amplifier, but the speaker still retains comfortable headroom before distortion sets in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the InWall 845 LCR be used without a subwoofer?

Yes, for music or movies at moderate volume. The response goes down to 42 Hz, which covers most content. For home theater with strong impact effects (explosions, orchestral soundtracks), a dedicated subwoofer will handle frequencies below 80 Hz and relieve the speaker.

What amplifier should I choose to power this speaker?

A home theater amplifier delivering 50 to 100 W per channel into 8 ohms is suitable. The 89 dB sensitivity is average: the speaker is neither particularly power-hungry nor exceptionally efficient. Canton offers the Smart Amp 5.1 S2 as a compatible accessory, but any quality amplifier will do the job.

What wall thickness should I plan for?

At least 6.8 cm to house the chassis. The supplied mounting system works on panels up to 4 cm thick (typical plasterboard). For thicker or solid masonry walls, the ER 4 LCR pre-installation frame (sold separately) makes mounting easier.

Is the speaker suitable for ceiling installation?

It is designed for vertical wall installation, with the two woofers above and below the tweeter. Horizontal mounting on the ceiling would alter sound dispersion. For ceilings, Canton’s InCeiling models are more appropriate.

How does the treble adjustment work?

A small switch on the baffle allows you to slightly attenuate or boost the tweeter level. This adjustment compensates for room reflections: you reduce the highs in a very reflective environment (tiled floors, large windows), and boost them in an absorbent room (carpet, thick curtains).

Is this speaker compatible with Dolby Atmos systems?

It can be used as a base-layer speaker in an Atmos setup, but not as a ceiling speaker for height channels. For those channels, Canton offers dedicated InCeiling models.
