Overview

The German manufacturer Canton has been making in-wall speakers for several decades. The InWall 865 belongs to the 800 series, which stands out for its use of aluminum diaphragms on all its drivers. This rectangular model (23.6 × 33 cm) is designed for in-wall integration wherever discreet, high-quality sound distribution is required: distributed hi-fi installations, surround channels in a home theater system, or sound reinforcement for a living space.

Aluminum drivers and pivoting tweeter

The InWall 865 combines a 165 mm midbass driver with a 25 mm soft-dome tweeter, both featuring aluminum diaphragms. This light yet rigid material promotes a fast response and precise control of diaphragm movement, resulting in clear, detailed reproduction of transients.

The tweeter is mounted on a swivel. It can be manually tilted after installation to direct the high frequencies toward the listening area, even when the speaker is not positioned directly in front of the listeners. A tweeter level control allows you to reduce or boost the high frequencies depending on the room’s acoustics and the listening distance. These two adjustments provide valuable flexibility in setups where the ideal placement is not always possible.

Clean integration thanks to the magnetic grille

The speakers in the 800 series use a metal grille held in place by magnets. This solution avoids visible clips or fasteners and allows the grille to be removed easily without tools. The grille can be painted to match the wall color, which simplifies aesthetic integration in interiors where discretion is a priority.

Canton supplies a cutting template with exact dimensions (19.8 × 29.4 cm) to mark out the opening in the wall. The installation depth of 8.5 cm remains reasonable for mounting in standard drywall partitions. For masonry walls, Canton offers an optional metal mounting frame (reference ER 6 WFB 650) that makes it easier to secure the speaker in a masonry opening.

Power handling and frequency response

The technical specifications indicate a music power handling of 120 watts and a nominal load of 60 watts at 8 ohms impedance. The 87.5 dB sensitivity (2.83 V/1 m) is average for in-wall speakers of this size. This means that a moderately powered home theater or hi-fi amplifier is sufficient to achieve a comfortable listening level in a medium-sized room.

The crossover frequency between the woofer and the tweeter is set at 2,900 Hz. The low end extends down to 120 Hz according to the manufacturer’s specifications. For deeper bass or stronger low-frequency foundation, adding a subwoofer is a logical option, especially in a home theater setup.

Installation and connection

Canton’s “Easy-Link” connectors allow for quick wiring: the speaker cable is inserted directly into spring-loaded terminals, with no need for soldering or special connectors. The speaker is sold individually, allowing you to purchase the exact number of units required for your chosen configuration.

The maximum wall thickness supported is 4 cm. Beyond this, the claw-mounting system can no longer grip the partition properly, and the use of the mounting frame becomes necessary. The standard white finish becomes visually unobtrusive once the grille is painted to match the wall color.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the InWall 865 be used as a center speaker for home theater?

No, this model is not optimized for center channel use. Canton offers the InWall 845 LCR or InWall 949 LCR, which feature a configuration with two woofers flanking the tweeter for better horizontal dispersion of dialogue.

What cable gauge should be used for wiring?

A 1.5 mm² cable is suitable for lengths under 10 meters. Beyond that, opt for 2.5 mm² to limit signal loss.

Can the grille be replaced if it is damaged?

Yes, Canton sells the grilles as spare parts. The magnetic system makes them easy to swap.

Will the speaker work with a 4-ohm amplifier?

The impedance of the InWall 865 is 8 ohms. It is compatible with the vast majority of amplifiers, including those designed for 4-ohm loads, without risk of overloading.

Can you paint the diaphragm or only the grille?

Only the grille is intended to be painted. The aluminum diaphragm must not be covered, as this would impair its acoustic properties.
