Overview

In a built-in home theater system, ensuring consistent sound between the front channels remains a major challenge. The LCR (Left/Center/Right) configuration offers an elegant solution by allowing the same speaker to be used for all three positions. Canton applies this principle with the InWall 949 LCR, an in-wall speaker whose symmetrical design enables both vertical and horizontal installation with no acoustic compromise.

A symmetrical configuration designed for home theater

The driver layout follows a classic LCR speaker pattern: the tweeter sits in the center, flanked by two identical 135 mm mid-bass drivers. This symmetry is not just aesthetic; it ensures consistent sound dispersion regardless of the speaker’s orientation.

In a vertical position, the InWall 949 LCR serves as the left or right channel. Rotated horizontally below or above a screen, it becomes a center channel without compromising horizontal dispersion, a common issue with traditional horizontally configured center speakers where aligned drivers create a narrow emission lobe.

Ceramic diaphragms across the entire spectrum

All three drivers use ceramic diaphragms. This material combines high rigidity with low mass, two properties that promote precise transients and limit coloration. The 25 mm soft-dome tweeter handles frequencies above 2,800 Hz while the two 135 mm drivers share bass and midrange duties.

The stated frequency response extends from 42 Hz to 40,000 Hz. The low-end limit is respectable for a speaker of this size, although adding a subwoofer will deliver more generous infrabass in a cinema setup.

Acoustic tuning options

Every room has its own acoustic signature. Reflective surfaces, unusual mounting angles, or asymmetrical positioning can all affect perceived frequency balance. Canton includes two adjustments to compensate for these variables.

The tweeter can be rotated on its axis to direct the high frequencies toward the listening area, even when the speaker is offset from the listener. A high-frequency level switch also allows you to reduce or boost the treble depending on the room’s characteristics. In a living room with glass walls, a slight cut will prevent harshness; in a heavily damped room, a boost will compensate for absorption.

Installation and visual integration

The 6.8 cm mounting depth makes the InWall 949 LCR compatible with most standard drywall partitions. Canton’s Easy-Link connectors simplify cable hookup with no soldering required. The speaker is secured in the cutout using fold-out clamping tabs, a common method that avoids screwing directly into the wall.

The metal grille is easily removed thanks to its magnetic attachment. It can be painted to blend in with the wall, turning the speaker into a near-invisible element. For installations requiring reinforcement of the cutout or mounting in thicker partitions, Canton offers the optional ER 4 LCR frame.

Power handling and efficiency

With a sensitivity of 89 dB (2.83 V / 1 m) and a nominal impedance of 8 ohms, the InWall 949 LCR poses no particular challenge for amplifiers. The 70 W nominal power rating and 140 W music power handling provide ample headroom for movie sessions at lively volume levels without risking distortion.

The speaker is passive: you’ll need an amplifier or AV receiver capable of driving the three front channels. Canton recommends setting these speakers to “Small” mode in the receiver’s configuration menu, redirecting low frequencies to a dedicated subwoofer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the InWall 949 LCR be used only as a center channel?

Yes. Its symmetrical design makes it highly versatile. It works on its own as a center channel or as a pair for the left and right channels. The advantage of the LCR configuration lies precisely in the ability to use three identical speakers for consistent sound across the entire front soundstage.

What wall thickness is required?

The mounting depth is 6.8 cm. A standard metal-stud drywall partition (around 7 to 10 cm total thickness) is suitable. For solid walls or unusual configurations, the ER 4 LCR mounting frame simplifies integration.

Does the pivoting tweeter need to be adjusted during installation?

The rotation is done manually before fitting the grille. Simply aim the dome toward the main listening position. No special tools are required; the adjustment is done by hand.

Can the grille be painted without affecting the sound?

Canton designs its metal grilles to remain acoustically neutral even after a thin coat of paint. Avoid thick or textured paints that could clog the perforations.

What amplifier should be used to power these speakers?

A standard AV receiver delivering 50 to 100 W per channel into 8 ohms is more than sufficient. The 89 dB sensitivity ensures comfortable listening levels without putting undue strain on the amplifier.
