Tonewinner, a Chinese manufacturer active in the audio sector since 1992, offers with the SW-D4000 a 12-inch active subwoofer positioned at the heart of its “Storm Series” range. This model stands out with 800 W RMS amplification and comprehensive DSP digital processing, controllable from a smartphone. The subwoofer is designed for both home theater installations and music listening, with a claimed low-frequency extension down to 16 Hz.

A driver designed for endurance

The SW-D4000’s 30 cm transducer uses a cast aluminum frame that limits unwanted vibrations under heavy load. The cone, rigid and paired with an elastic rubber surround, allows for large excursions without significant distortion. The 65 mm voice coil, wound in OFC (oxygen-free) copper, withstands the thermal stress generated by prolonged high-volume use. The dual magnet ensures a stable dynamic response, including on passages requiring high sound pressure levels.

800 watts Class D with built-in protections

The Class D amplifier delivers 800 W RMS into 3 Ω, with peaks reaching 3,500 to 4,000 W depending on sources. This power reserve allows the subwoofer to respond instantly to sharp transients (explosions, impacts in films) while maintaining dynamic headroom. Protection circuits against overvoltage, overload, overheating, and overcurrent prevent damage in intensive use. The power supply, switchable between 110-115 V and 220-230 V, makes it easier to use in different regions of the world.

Four DSP modes and parametric equalization

The built-in digital processing offers four sound profiles tailored to different uses. The “Deep” mode lowers the cutoff frequencies to prioritize low-end extension. The “Strong” mode enhances presence and perceived impact. The “Normal” mode provides a balanced setting, while the “User” mode lets the user define their own parameters. The parametric equalizer, whose number of bands varies depending on sources (generally 7 bands on comparable models in the range), allows the sub’s response to be adapted to the room acoustics and to correct room mode issues that are common in home installations.

Control via app and touch screen

The LCD screen on the rear displays settings in real time. Its inverted layout, designed to be read when looking down at the subwoofer from above, simplifies adjustments during installation. Four touch buttons allow you to navigate through the menus. The Bluetooth connection provides access to the Tonewinner app (available on iOS and Android) to change gain, phase (0° or 180°), crossover frequencies, and EQ from your seat. Firmware updates are performed wirelessly via the same app.

Versatile connectivity for different setups

The rear panel includes a balanced XLR input, a stereo RCA input, and a Sub/LFE RCA input. This variety allows the SW-D4000 to be connected to professional audio processors as well as consumer home theater amplifiers. The Sub/LFE and stereo RCA outputs allow daisy-chaining a second subwoofer: in a dual configuration, bass distribution in the room becomes more even, reducing issues related to acoustic nulls and peaks.

Place within the Tonewinner range

The SW-D4000 fits between the SW-D2000 (12 inches, 400 W RMS) and the SW-D6000 (15 inches, 800 W RMS. Compared with the D2000, it doubles the RMS power while keeping the same driver diameter, resulting in greater dynamic headroom and better control at high volume. Compared with the D6000, it offers a smaller footprint for moderately sized rooms (15 to 35 m² according to the manufacturer’s estimates), while sharing the same amplifier section.
