Tonewinner SW-D1000: 25 cm subwoofer with analog amplification

Tonewinner has been producing amplifiers and audio electronics since 1992. Initially as an OEM for Western brands (Advance Paris, Emotiva, Nuforce), the Guangzhou-based manufacturer now markets its own devices. The SW-D1000 is the entry-level model in the Storm series, a range of active subwoofers comprising seven models, from 25 cm to dual 38 cm.

A driver designed for long excursion

The 25 cm transducer uses a high-density paper cone, both light and rigid, mounted on a one-piece stamped steel frame. The 35 mm diameter voice coil and high-density foam surround allow for long excursions without loss of control. This design promotes the reproduction of very low frequencies with controlled distortion levels, even at high volume.

The driver is front-firing, as are the two bass-reflex ports. This choice simplifies placement: the subwoofer can be positioned close to a rear wall without the bass becoming muffled or boomy.

Class H amplification and generous power supply

Where most compact subwoofers use switching amplification (Class D), the SW-D1000 features an analog Class H module. This type of circuit combines two power rails to limit heat dissipation while preserving the qualities of linear amplification. The finned heatsink integrated into the rear panel ensures proper heat evacuation during long sessions.

The power supply is based on a large-section toroidal transformer. This bulky component (the subwoofer weighs 19 kg) guarantees sufficient current reserves to handle the sharp transients of movie soundtracks or sustained bass lines.

Settings and connectivity

The rear panel offers three inputs: stereo RCA (left/right), balanced mono XLR, and RCA LFE. The XLR input will be useful in setups where the preamplifier or processor has balanced outputs, minimizing the risk of hum over long cable runs.

Controls are limited to the essentials: volume knob, low-pass filter cutoff frequency (adjustable up to 240 Hz), and phase switch (0° or 180°). The absence of DSP correction or parametric EQ may disappoint users accustomed to digital subwoofers, but these analog settings provide simple, latency-free operation.
