HumminGuru ORBIT: antistatic treatment for vinyl records

Static electricity on vinyl records is a persistent problem that carbon brushes and ionizing guns only solve imperfectly. The HumminGuru Orbit specifically targets this issue with a different approach: rather than requiring the user to handle a gun above the record, the device sits directly on the turntable spindle and performs the treatment autonomously.

A plasma generator that rotates around the record

The Orbit is placed on the turntable spindle, above the record to be treated. Its motorized circular base rests on the center label, held in place by rubber feet. The device features two plasma blades coupled with a high-speed fan that propels ions directly toward the vinyl surface.

The two plasma outlets simultaneously emit more than 50 million positive and negative ions per cubic centimeter. This simultaneous bipolar emission sets the Orbit apart from traditional antistatic guns, which generate the two polarities alternately during separate manual actions. Conventional guns emit only one polarity at a time, which makes neutralization more difficult and can even create new charges if the ionic balance is not maintained.

The full cycle lasts about 90 seconds, during which the device completes 10 rotations around the record at a constant distance of 23 millimeters from the surface. This fixed distance ensures consistent effectiveness across the entire playback area, whereas manual use of a gun involves variations in distance and angle.

Autonomous and rechargeable operation

Pressing the top button starts the cycle. The Orbit starts, rotates, and stops automatically once the 10 rotations are complete. The built-in battery recharges via the supplied USB-C cable and provides more than 100 uses per charge. LED indicators show the remaining battery level.

The box contents include the device, a charging cable, a cleaning brush, and two spindle adapters, each 6 mm thick. These adapters make it possible to use the Orbit with spindles whose height reaches up to 23 mm once the record is in place.

Compatibility with turntables

The Orbit requires a free rotation space of at least 326 mm in diameter on the platter. For a standard 30 cm record, this represents a margin of about 10.6 mm beyond the outer edge of the vinyl. Most turntables provide this space, but you should check that the tonearm in its resting position, as well as any cover or accessory, does not interfere with rotation.

The spindle height with the record in place must not exceed 11 mm. Beyond that, one or two adapters must be stacked onto the spindle before placing the Orbit. The device is made of ABS, weighs 625 grams, and measures 27 × 92 × 10.5 cm.

Why treat static electricity?

Static electricity builds up whenever two surfaces rub against each other: the vinyl against the inner sleeve, against the platter, against dry air. Low-humidity environments make the phenomenon worse, because ambient moisture normally helps dissipate charges.

A statically charged record becomes a dust magnet, attracting particles suspended in the air. The crackles and pops audible during playback are not always caused by scratches or dirt: they can result from microscopic electrostatic discharges between the stylus and the groove. Treating static charge before playback reduces this unwanted noise and limits dust buildup over the long term.

Treatment effectiveness may vary depending on the record material, ambient temperature and humidity, as well as the type of platter used.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Orbit work with 25 cm and 17 cm records?

The device treats any record placed on the platter, regardless of its size, as long as the 326 mm rotation space is available. Smaller formats will be covered by the Orbit’s path, which rotates around the central spindle and sweeps an area corresponding to the diameter of a 30 cm record.

Should the record be cleaned before using the Orbit?

The antistatic treatment does not remove dirt or fingerprints: it only neutralizes electrical charges. For optimal results, it is preferable to dust off or clean the record beforehand, then use the Orbit just before playback.

Can the Orbit be used with a record weight?

No, the Orbit occupies the spindle and rests on the record’s center label during treatment. It must be removed before playback, at which point a record weight can be placed in its position.

Does the Orbit make noise during operation?

The device emits a slight motor hum and fan airflow noise. The sound level remains moderate, and the cycle lasts only about 90 seconds.

What is the difference compared with an antistatic gun such as the Zerostat?

Traditional guns emit positive and negative ions sequentially during two separate manual actions. The user must maintain a constant distance and manually cover the entire surface. The Orbit automates this process with simultaneous bipolar emission at a fixed distance, making the treatment more uniform and repeatable.
