HumminGuru cleaning fluid for I-Brush

A 50 ml bottle, a built-in dropper, and an alcohol-free formula: this cleaning fluid is the consumable specifically designed for the HumminGuru I-Brush kit. It works on dust, fingerprints, and surface residue while preserving the integrity of the vinyl. The Hong Kong brand chose to exclude isopropyl alcohol, often used in consumer cleaning solutions, in favor of a gentler long-term composition.

Why an alcohol-free formula?

Vinyl records are made of PVC, a type of plastic, and alcohol can cause PVC to deteriorate over time. Alcohol can dissolve or soften the material, leading to warping, distortion, or the appearance of visible pitting on the record surface. This observation, which HumminGuru reiterates in its technical documentation, guided the choice of an isopropanol-free formula.

The debate over alcohol in vinyl cleaning solutions has divided the community for decades. Some collectors have used alcohol-based mixtures for forty years without noticing any audible degradation. Others prefer to avoid any risk, especially with older pressings or valuable records. HumminGuru has opted for caution: their fluid allows for daily cleaning without concerns about cumulative effects.

Use designed for the I-Brush system

This fluid works in tandem with the I-Brush kit and its dual-pad system. The two pads serve distinct functions: the wet pad (orange) applies the cleaning fluid and cleans the record surface, while the dry pad (blue) absorbs residual moisture and cleaning residue. This separation reduces the risk of cross-contamination between steps.

The brush holder includes a fill line that allows you to measure the fluid quantity precisely. A few drops are poured into this groove, the orange pad is pressed against the line so it absorbs the product, then the record is cleaned by following the grooves. The blue pad then takes over to remove excess fluid before air drying.

Compatible records and restrictions

This cleaning fluid is specifically designed for LP and EP records. It must not be applied to SP records (78 rpm). These, often pressed in shellac rather than vinyl, require different precautions. The I-Brush alone, without fluid, can however be used to dust 78 rpm records.

180g and 220g records are compatible without restriction.

Two complementary uses

The fluid meets two cleaning scenarios:

The first is quick cleaning before listening. A pass with the wet brush followed by the dry brush is enough to remove surface dust, static electricity, and handling marks. This is the daily use intended by HumminGuru.

The second is preparation before deep cleaning. For records that are both moldy and marked with fingerprints, it is advisable to carry out a pre-cleaning with the I-Brush kit before using the HumminGuru machine. The brush removes the coarsest debris, allowing the ultrasonic machine to focus on particles lodged deep in the grooves.
