Michell Engineering T2 Tonearm
Overview
When a turntable manufacturer renowned for its GyroDec and Orbe decides to refine its entry-level offering, the result deserves attention. The T2 adopts the wiring developed for the T8 model and benefits from hand assembly at Michell Engineering’s British workshops in Stevenage. This tonearm accompanies the TecnoDec turntable and shares with it a clear philosophy: extracting the maximum information from the groove without compromise on mechanical precision.
An aluminium tube designed for rigidity
The T2 uses a one-piece aluminium tonearm tube. This monoblock design eliminates joints that could generate parasitic resonances. Aluminium was chosen for its favourable rigidity-to-mass ratio, and the tube is manufactured to tight tolerances in order to reduce stress on the bearings.
The headshell integrated into the tube is machined to be perfectly parallel to the bearing axis. This geometry ensures that the cartridge operates under the alignment conditions specified by the manufacturer, with no azimuth adjustment required during installation.
Polymer bearings with minimal friction
The T2’s bearings use polymers with a very low coefficient of friction. This technical choice allows the arm to track record undulations (warps, minor eccentricities) with negligible resistance. The cartridge can then extract the micro-information engraved in the groove without being impeded by the arm’s mechanics.
In practice, this low friction results in silent groove tracking. Surface noise from vinyl is reduced, and tracking-related distortion decreases noticeably. Both the horizontal and vertical bearings are individually adjusted during assembly to ensure optimal performance.
Wiring inherited from the T8
Michell has transferred to the T2 the wiring technology developed for its higher-range T8 tonearm. The phono cables feature low capacitance, a critical parameter for preserving high frequencies when transmitting the signal from the cartridge to the preamplifier. Neutrik RCA connectors ensure reliable contact and long-term durability.
The internal wiring connects the cartridge pins to the output sockets without any interruption or intermediate solder joint. This signal continuity minimises losses and interference.
Three-point mounting and installation on the TecnoDec
The three-point mounting system provides a stable base on the turntable. Each fixing point contributes to rigidifying the assembly and preventing micro-movements that could degrade playback.
The T2 is sold exclusively with a Michell turntable, and its compatibility with the TecnoDec makes it the natural partner for this entry-level model. The mounting distance of 222 mm (from the centre of the platter to the tonearm axis) corresponds to Rega standards, which simplifies overhang calculation and cartridge alignment.
Effective mass and cartridge compatibility
With an effective mass of 11 grams, the T2 falls within the low-mass tonearm category. This characteristic makes it compatible with a wide range of medium-to-high compliance cartridges, typical of moving magnet (MM) models and many lightweight moving coil (MC) models.
The arm/cartridge resonant frequency — an essential criterion for stable playback — will generally fall within the optimal range of 8 to 12 Hz with this type of cartridge. Users of low-compliance cartridges should verify compatibility or consider a tonearm with higher effective mass.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the T2 be mounted on a turntable from another brand?
No. Michell does not sell the T2 separately. This tonearm is supplied exclusively with Michell turntables, primarily the TecnoDec. Mounting it on other turntables would require a specific armboard and is not supported by the manufacturer.
Which cartridges are compatible with the T2?
The 11 g effective mass suits medium-to-high compliance cartridges. Most MM cartridges on the market and lightweight MC cartridges work without difficulty. For very low-compliance cartridges (certain high-end MC models), the resonant frequency may fall outside the ideal range.
Is the TecnoWeight included?
No. The TecnoWeight is an optional counterweight sold separately. It lowers the arm’s centre of gravity and improves tracking stability. Adding it represents a possible upgrade to refine the T2’s performance.
Is there a VTA/SRA adjustment on the T2?
The standard version of the T2 does not feature an integrated VTA (Vertical Tracking Angle) adjustment. The angle is set during mounting on the turntable. To adjust the arm height, shims must be inserted under the mounting base — an operation that requires a little patience.
What is the difference between the T2 and the TecnoArm 2?
These are two distinct tonearms. The TecnoArm 2 is a more refined model featuring a tube drilled with 22 holes to reduce mass, a shot-peening treatment to alter the tube’s sonic character, and internal wiring made from 99.9999% pure silver Litz wire. It also features an integrated VTA/SRA adjustment. The T2 offers a simpler design at a more accessible price point.
Does the T2 handle warped records well?
The low bearing friction allows the arm to track record undulations with ease. Moderate warps, common on older or poorly stored vinyl, are generally absorbed without skipping or audible distortion.
