Sony BRAVIA Theatre Sub 9
Overview
Two 200 mm aluminum speakers, mounted face to face in the same enclosure: that is the principle behind the BRAVIA Theatre Sub 9. This opposing-speaker configuration, powered by 600 W of S-Master digital amplification (300 W per driver), pursues a precise goal: reaching very low frequencies while keeping distortion and unwanted vibrations under control.
Two speakers working against each other
The opposing arrangement (“dual opposing”) is not new in the world of subwoofers, but Sony applies it here with two identical 200 mm aluminum drivers, each with its own amplification stage. When one speaker pushes air outward, the other moves in the opposite direction. The mechanical forces cancel each other out inside the cabinet, which reduces vibrations transmitted to the floor and furniture. The audible result: deep, tight bass, without the coffee table starting to shake.
The aluminum diaphragms provide rigidity and lightness. The cone keeps its shape even at high excursion, which limits signal deformation in deep bass. With 600 W of total power, the Sub 9 can deliver substantial sound pressure in medium to large rooms.
A wireless subwoofer, two possible orientations
The Sub 9 connects wirelessly to compatible Sony soundbars and systems. No audio cable needs to be run between the bar and the subwoofer: only the power cable is required. Pairing is done via a QR code and the BRAVIA Connect app, which guides installation step by step on a smartphone.
The subwoofer can be placed vertically or horizontally. Its dimensions (390 × 400 × 350 mm) and two-volume design allow it to fit beside a piece of furniture or under a console, provided at least one side is left clear for sound dispersion. At 23.3 kg, it remains transportable but not light: this is a serious subwoofer, not a supplementary accessory.
Dual subwoofer setup for large rooms
Sony now supports the use of two subwoofers with the BRAVIA Theatre Bar 7, Bar 8, and Bar 9 soundbars. For the dual setup, two subwoofers of the same model are required. The benefit of a second subwoofer is not only to increase volume: by placing two Sub 9 units in different spots in the room, frequency response irregularities caused by the room acoustics are smoothed out. The dips and peaks in bass that naturally appear depending on the listening position are reduced. A phase adjustment is available in the app to fine-tune the time alignment between the two subwoofers.
A broad ecosystem, but exclusively Sony
The Sub 9 is compatible with a specific list of Sony devices: the BRAVIA Theatre Bar 9, Bar 8, and Bar 7 soundbars, the previous HT-A7000, HT-A5000, and HT-A3000 models, the BRAVIA Theatre Quad / HT-A9 system, and the STR-AN1000 and TA-AN1000 home theater amplifiers. On the other hand, no wired input allows it to be connected to an amplifier or audio system from another brand. This is a subwoofer designed for the Sony ecosystem and only for it.
The BRAVIA Connect app centralizes settings: subwoofer level, phase, and acoustic recalibration in case of a position change. Recent BRAVIA TVs also integrate subwoofer controls into their Quick Settings menu, which avoids having to take out the smartphone for every adjustment.
Power consumption and automatic standby
In operation, the Sub 9 consumes around 100 W. In standard standby, consumption drops to 0.3 W, and to 2 W in network standby (to keep the wireless connection active). Automatic standby engages after 20 minutes without a signal, which avoids leaving it running unnecessarily.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Sub 9 work with BRAVIA TVs without a soundbar?
No. The Sub 9 requires a compatible Sony soundbar or home theater system as an intermediary. It does not connect directly to a TV.
Can a Sub 9 be paired with a Sub 8 or a Sub 7 in a dual setup?
No, the dual setup requires two strictly identical subwoofers. You need two Sub 9 units to use this function.
What is the main difference between the Sub 9 and the Sub 8?
The Sub 9 features two opposing 200 mm speakers with 600 W of power, whereas the Sub 8 uses a single 200 mm speaker with 300 W. The Sub 9 goes lower in frequency and generates fewer unwanted vibrations thanks to its opposing-speaker design.
Is a Wi-Fi network required to use the subwoofer?
The subwoofer uses a direct wireless link with the soundbar, independent of the home Wi-Fi. However, the BRAVIA Connect app, useful for initial setup and advanced settings, requires the smartphone and the system to be on the same network.
