A 30 cm woofer in a band-pass enclosure

The PRO-12SW-LS features a 30 cm (12-inch) woofer with an IMG (Injection Molded Graphite) cone, a technology Klipsch uses across its entire range. The injection-molded graphite cone is both lightweight and rigid, which limits cone deformation at high output levels and reduces harmonic distortion. The driver is a long-throw type, allowing it to move a large volume of air despite the sealed enclosure.

The acoustic loading is band-pass type: the driver radiates through a compression chamber built into the enclosure rather than directly to the outside. This principle mechanically filters frequencies and concentrates sound energy within the useful passband. Frequency response extends from 34 Hz to 100 Hz (± 3 dB), with measurable extension down to 25 Hz at -10 dB. Sensitivity is 90 dB and power handling reaches 250 W. Figures that place this subwoofer in a high-performance category for outdoor use, where sound energy dissipates quickly in open space.

Dual voice coil and transformerless 70 V compatibility

The most notable technical feature of the PRO-12SW-LS is its dual voice coil (Dual Voice Coil). This design serves two functions. In low impedance mode, it allows the subwoofer to be wired in 8-ohm stereo or 4-ohm mono, depending on the desired configuration. In distributed line mode, it provides 70 V compatibility at 300 W without the use of a transformer.

This last point deserves a closer look. In a conventional 70 V installation, a line transformer is placed between the amplifier and the speaker to match impedance. The problem: transformers introduce magnetic core saturation at low frequencies, which degrades response below 60–80 Hz, precisely the operating range of a subwoofer. Klipsch gets around this by using the dual voice coil itself as the means of impedance matching, with no intermediate component. The signal reaches the driver without the losses a transformer would have caused.

This impedance versatility makes the PRO-12SW-LS compatible with simple residential installations (a stereo amplifier and a few speakers) as well as with complex distributed 70 V systems, typical of commercial installations covering large areas.

Buried, weatherproof, and durable

The PRO-12SW-LS is intended for full burial. The entire enclosure disappears into the ground; only the top cap remains visible at surface level. This UV-resistant, corrosion-resistant aluminum cap has a metallic brown finish that blends into a garden environment. It is also paintable if you want to match it to a specific ground covering. The enclosure itself is made of high-density polyethylene, a material unaffected by moisture and temperature variations, with a matte black finish that is also paintable.

Full burial is not just aesthetic: the large internal volume of the buried enclosure is what makes such deep bass extension possible. An equivalent surface-mounted enclosure would have to be significantly larger to achieve the same performance.

The IP45 certification guarantees protection against water jets and solid objects larger than one millimeter. Electrical connection is made via a 4-conductor direct-burial cable, with no impedance selector exposed at the surface. This design choice eliminates a potential entry point for water, which is often the weak link in outdoor installations.

Its dimensions (635 × 410 × 671 mm) and weight of 25 kg imply substantial excavation and an installation that falls more under professional implementation than weekend DIY.

Integration into the Klipsch Landscape range

The PRO-12SW-LS is part of the Klipsch Professional Landscape series, which also includes the PRO-10SW-LS (a half-burial model with a 25 cm woofer) and the PRO-10SW-RK (a rock-shaped version). The range’s satellite speakers, the PRO-650T-LS and PRO-500T-LS, share the same 8-ohm / 70 V / 100 V compatibility and the same IP45 certification. Together, they form a coherent system in which the satellites handle the midrange and treble while the buried subwoofer takes care of the low frequencies.

The choice between the PRO-10SW-LS and the PRO-12SW-LS depends on the area to be covered and the level of discretion sought. The 10-inch model, half buried, is easier to install but remains partially visible. The 12-inch model, fully buried, requires more work but disappears completely.
