Mofi Electronics Super Heavyweight
Overview
A record weight that does more than just press the disc against the platter. The MoFi Electronics Super Heavyweight incorporates an absorbing polymer developed with Harmonic Resolution Systems (HRS), an American specialist in vibration isolation for high-end hi-fi systems. The goal: to drain parasitic noise (groove, motor, bearing) away from the stylus rather than simply adding weight to the record. The result is noticeable from the very first bars.
A two-headed engineering effort
The Super Heavyweight was born from a collaboration between MoFi Electronics and Mike Latvis, founder and chief engineer of HRS. Latvis spent more than twenty years in aerospace and defense before dedicating himself to acoustic isolation, and his proprietary polymers already equip the isolation bases, platforms, and Nimbus systems found in many reference installations.
The polymer integrated into the Super Heavyweight is not a simple passive damper. It absorbs the vibratory energy generated by contact between the stylus and the groove, as well as that transmitted by the turntable’s bearing and motor. The residual energy is converted into heat and dissipated, which audibly lowers the noise floor.
Construction and materials
The outer shell is machined from a billet of 6061 aluminum, an alloy commonly used in aeronautics for its rigidity-to-weight ratio. The surface is matte, the grip confident: you can place and remove the weight with one hand without risking dropping it on the record.
The bottom face, in direct contact with the vinyl label, is covered with a soft polymer that protects the record surface. The Super Heavyweight simply rests on the turntable’s center spindle, with no threading or clamping mechanism. This universal design makes it compatible with the vast majority of turntables on the market, whether belt-drive or direct-drive.
A calculated weight, not an arbitrary one
At 367.4 g, the Super Heavyweight is heavy enough to ensure firm coupling between the disc and the platter, but not so heavy as to place excessive strain on the motor, bearing, or suspension. This point is worth dwelling on: an overly heavy weight can slow the rotation speed, fatigue the motor over time, or unbalance a suspended turntable. MoFi states that this mass has been calibrated to remain neutral on the turntable’s mechanical operation.
Its compact dimensions (7.62 cm in diameter, 3.44 cm in height) allow it to fit under most dust covers without difficulty.
What you hear (and what you no longer hear)
The main contribution of the Super Heavyweight is a reduction in background noise. Residual crackle and mechanical hiss diminish, freeing up space for micro-details that are usually masked: the reverberation of a concert hall, a musician’s breath, the harmonics of a plucked string.
The bass gains in control and definition. On dense recordings, the double bass and kick drum separate more clearly from the rest of the spectrum. The soundstage appears more stable and quieter in its “blacks” — those moments of relative silence between notes where the turntable’s background noise is ordinarily perceptible.
The effect varies depending on the turntable. On an entry-level model with a light platter, the improvement can be significant. On a high-end turntable that is already well isolated, with a massive Delrin or acrylic platter, the improvement will be more subtle. The Super Heavyweight does not transform a mediocre turntable into a reference one, but it gets the best out of what is already there.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Super Heavyweight work with all turntables?
Yes. Its threadless design makes it compatible with any turntable equipped with a standard center spindle. It suits both direct-drive and belt-drive models, regardless of brand. The only precaution: verify that the motor and bearing can support an additional weight of approximately 370 g without strain.
What is the difference from a simple metal record weight?
A standard weight simply presses the record against the platter through its mass. The Super Heavyweight adds a vibration dissipation function thanks to its HRS polymer, which absorbs and converts parasitic mechanical energy into heat. The coupling is better and the noise floor is lower.
How do I choose between the Super Heavyweight and the Super Heavyweight Champion?
The Super Heavyweight (367.4 g) suits most turntables. The Champion (495.1 g) is designed for turntables with heavy platters (from approximately 2.3 kg). If your platter is light or if your turntable has a soft suspension, the Super Heavyweight is the safer choice.
Do I need to adjust the tonearm counterweight after placing the weight?
No. The weight rests on the center spindle and does not affect the tonearm balance or the cartridge tracking force. No additional adjustment is required.
Does the Super Heavyweight fit under a dust cover?
At 3.44 cm in height, it may cause issues on turntables whose lid sits very low. You should measure the available space between the center spindle and the closed dust cover before purchasing.
