Overview

Three speakers in a single 6 cm-thick cabinet: the RP-440D SB takes the acoustic technologies of Klipsch’s Reference Premiere range and compresses them into an ultra-slim on-wall format. It is a passive 3-channel soundbar (left, center, right) that by itself replaces the three front speakers of a home theater system, with one condition: it needs an amplifier to operate.

Three speakers, one single cabinet

The RP-440D SB is not a soundbar in the usual sense of the term. Where most active soundbars integrate their own amplification and digital processing, this one is a purely passive system with three separate channels, each housed in its own acoustic compartment within the same chassis. The left channel and the right channel each feature a 3.5-inch (8.89 cm) Cerametallic woofer and a 1-inch (2.54 cm) titanium dome tweeter. The center channel, which handles most of the dialogue in home theater, gets two 3.5-inch woofers for better presence in the midrange.

Each channel connects separately to the amplifier via its own terminal block. This passive operation requires an amp or AV receiver capable of powering three channels at 8 ohms, but in return it offers complete freedom in the choice of amplification and settings.

A Tractrix horn on each channel

The acoustic horn has been Klipsch’s signature since 1946. On the RP-440D SB, each tweeter is coupled to a 90° × 90° dispersion Tractrix horn, whose geometry (a precise mathematical curve, neither conical nor exponential) is designed to direct high-frequency sound energy toward the listening area. The practical result: a better-defined stereo image and fewer unwanted reflections on the surrounding walls.

The titanium dome tweeter’s LTS (Linear Travel Suspension) technology completes this setup. The linear suspension keeps the diaphragm moving in a regular piston motion, which reduces distortion during fast transients (percussion, special effects). Titanium, stiffer and lighter than aluminum or polymer, maintains its coherence all the way into the highest frequencies: the RP-440D SB’s response extends up to 25 kHz.

Spun copper Cerametallic woofers

The four 3.5-inch woofers use Cerametallic diaphragms, a ceramic-metal composite material that Klipsch reserves for its Reference Premiere range. These spun copper cones combine lightness and rigidity: the diaphragm keeps its shape under high excursion, which limits cone breakup phenomena (when the diaphragm deforms instead of faithfully reproducing the signal). Combined with the cabinet’s bass-reflex loading and the Tractrix horns, these woofers allow the bar to extend down to 65 Hz (±3 dB), respectable bass performance for transducers of this size, even if adding a subwoofer is still recommended for cinema content with strong infrasonic content.

Measured sensitivity is 92 dB (2.83 V / 1 m), a high value that means the RP-440D SB delivers substantial sound output from each watt of amplification. A modest amp (50 W per channel continuous, 200 W peak) is enough to power it properly.

A 6 cm profile for on-wall integration

At 106.68 cm wide, only 6.10 cm deep, and 15.24 cm high, the RP-440D SB is sized to align beneath a flat-screen TV without protruding from the wall. The matte black ABS cabinet visually matches current televisions and their slim bezels. The “wrap-around” grille (which covers the front and sides) attaches magnetically: remove it to reveal the copper transducers, replace it for a more discreet look.

The whole unit weighs 5.44 kg. The wall-mounting system is integrated into the chassis, with four-position keyhole slots that allow horizontal or vertical mounting. For installation on furniture, a tempered glass base is included.

Connection: three pairs of cables

An important point to anticipate: the RP-440D SB requires three separate speaker cables (one per channel), each connected to its screw terminal on the rear panel. Klipsch recommends a maximum 18 AWG cable so the conductors fit through the integrated channels on the back of the chassis. A thicker cable may not fit in these guides, which can complicate routing during a clean wall-mounted installation.

The crossover frequency between the tweeters and woofers is set at 2,200 Hz by the internal passive crossover. There is no user adjustment on this point: the crossover is factory-calculated for each channel.

One element of a larger system

The RP-440D SB is part of the Reference Premiere Designer On-Wall series, which also includes the RP-140D, RP-240D, and RP-640D speakers. These models share the same technologies (Tractrix horn, LTS tweeter, Cerametallic woofers) and the same aesthetics, making it possible to build a consistent surround system by pairing the bar at the front with matching surround speakers, all with minimal bulk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the RP-440D SB work without an amplifier?

No. It is a passive soundbar, which means it contains neither an amplifier nor signal processing. It must be connected to an AV receiver or a multichannel amplifier capable of delivering power to three separate 8-ohm channels.

Can it be used without a subwoofer?

The bar extends down to 65 Hz, which covers a good part of the musical spectrum and movie dialogue. For acoustic music or TV content, that may be enough. On the other hand, movie soundtracks rich in low frequencies (explosions, orchestral music) will clearly benefit from being supplemented by a dedicated subwoofer.

Can the bar be mounted vertically?

Yes. The four-position keyhole slots allow horizontal or vertical mounting. The Klipsch logo on the front is also removable and can be rotated by 45° to suit the chosen orientation.

Which surround speakers are compatible for a complete system?

The RP-140D, RP-240D, and RP-640D from the same Designer On-Wall series are the natural complements. They share the same transducers and the same finish. It can also be paired with other Klipsch Reference Premiere speakers, provided impedance consistency (8 ohms) and the range’s voicing are respected.
