Klipsch RP-240D

With only 6.1 cm of depth and just over 2 kg on the scale, the RP-240D fits Klipsch’s Reference Premiere acoustic technologies into an ultra-slim wall-mount format. It is part of the Designer On-Wall series, which also includes the smaller RP-140D (a single woofer), the larger RP-640D (six drivers), and the passive soundbar RP-440D SB. The RP-240D sits in the middle: two woofer/midrange drivers, a horn-loaded tweeter, and installation versatility that allows it to handle front channels, the center channel, or surround duties.

A cabinet designed to disappear on the wall

The RP-240D measures approximately 40 × 15 cm with a depth of 6.1 cm. Next to a flat-panel television, it is nearly invisible. Its high-rigidity ABS cabinet, finished in matte black, breaks from traditional wooden enclosures: the material is lighter and better suited to the demands of wall mounting, although the resonance of an ABS cabinet remains an acoustic compromise compared to the MDF or wood used on classic Reference Premiere speakers.

The wraparound magnetic grille removes effortlessly. Without it, you can see Klipsch’s signature copper-colored cones and the tweeter’s black horn. A practical detail: the Klipsch logo on the front rotates 45°, allowing it to be reoriented depending on whether the speaker is positioned vertically or horizontally.

Wall mounting or freestanding, your choice

Two sets of keyhole slots (four directions) are provided on the back of the cabinet, one for vertical mounting and one for horizontal. Wall installation requires only two screws spaced 33.6 cm apart, with an offset of approximately 8 mm downward once the speaker is locked in place. If no wall stud is available at the desired location, wall anchors supporting a minimum of 2.75 kg are sufficient, as the speaker weighs only 2.38 kg.

For freestanding use, Klipsch includes a tempered glass stand that accommodates the speaker in both orientations. Placed on a TV stand or shelf, the RP-240D functions as a standard compact speaker. Klipsch recommends leaving at least 2.5 cm between the cabinet and the television to avoid transmitted vibrations and to preserve ventilation of the bass-reflex port. Ceiling mounting, however, is not supported by the manufacturer.

A Tractrix horn in a 90° × 90° format

The acoustic horn has been the defining feature of Klipsch speakers since the late 1940s, when Paul W. Klipsch designed the Klipschorn. The Tractrix profile, introduced in 1989, corrects the shortcomings of exponential flare horns (internal resonances, sound coloration) by ensuring a more gradual transition of the sound wave between the throat and the mouth of the horn.

On the RP-240D, the Tractrix horn offers 90° × 90° coverage, identical horizontally and vertically. This square format has a practical advantage: whether the speaker is mounted upright or on its side, the tweeter dispersion remains the same. Sound is directed toward the listening area, limiting unwanted reflections off walls and ceilings. The result is noticeable in the imaging of voices and sound effects, which remain well anchored in space, and in the consistency of the listening experience for multiple listeners in the same room.

LTS tweeter with titanium dome and Cerametallic drivers

The 25 mm tweeter uses a titanium dome and a suspension system called LTS (Linear Travel Suspension). The lightweight and rigid Kapton diaphragm keeps the dome moving linearly throughout its full travel, reducing distortion, especially at high volumes. This is the same type of tweeter found in Reference Premiere tower and bookshelf speakers.

The two 89 mm woofer/midrange drivers feature Cerametallic diaphragms, a ceramic-metal composite recognizable by its copper hue. This diaphragm combines rigidity and lightness: it resists deformation (what engineers call cone “break-up”) while remaining light enough to respond quickly to transients. The crossover frequency is set at 2,200 Hz, giving the woofers a fairly wide frequency band while relieving the tweeter of the most demanding frequencies.

High sensitivity and amplifier compatibility

With a sensitivity of 94 dB (measured at 2.83 V / 1 m), the RP-240D extracts a high sound level from every watt it receives. A mid-range home theater amplifier delivering 50 to 80 W per channel is sufficient to drive it comfortably. The power handling reaches 75 W continuous and 300 W peak, providing a comfortable dynamic headroom for the most intense passages of a soundtrack.

The nominal impedance of 8 ohms makes the RP-240D compatible with virtually all amplifiers and AV receivers on the market. Connection is made via single binding posts (no bi-wiring), simplifying hookup. For cabling, wire with a cross-section of 1.0 to 1.5 mm² (16 to 18 AWG gauge) is suitable. Beyond that, the cable may not fit into the cable management channels on the back of the cabinet designed for a clean wall installation.

Frequency response and bass: what to expect

The stated frequency response is 67 Hz to 25 kHz (±3 dB). The low end deserves some context: 67 Hz is roughly a low B on a piano, or the fundamental of a deep male voice. For stereo music in a small room, this is sufficient to reproduce the essential bass range. For home theater with low-frequency effects (explosions, rumbles), a subwoofer remains a logical complement. The bass-reflex loading helps extend the bass compared to a sealed enclosure of the same volume, but the compact cabinet dimensions impose physical limits that no amount of engineering can overcome.

Practical uses in a home theater system

The RP-240D can fill several roles in a multichannel setup. Mounted vertically on either side of a wall-mounted television, it handles the left and right front channels. Positioned horizontally below or above the screen, it can serve as the center channel, with the Tractrix horn’s 90° × 90° dispersion ensuring even coverage even when laid on its side. In surround positions, it delivers more detailed performance than most small satellite speakers.

The Designer On-Wall series makes it possible to build a complete system with visually matched speakers: two RP-240D (or two RP-640D) for the front, one RP-240D on its side for the center, two RP-140D for surround, all complemented by a Klipsch subwoofer. All models in the series share the same LTS tweeter and Tractrix horn, ensuring a consistent tonal character from one speaker to the next — a point often overlooked but clearly audible when a sound effect pans from one channel to another.
