Klipsch RP-140D

With a depth of 6 cm and a weight of 1.7 kg, the RP-140D is the most compact speaker in Klipsch’s Reference Premiere Designer On-Wall series. It carries over the drivers and acoustic technologies from the Reference Premiere floor-standing and bookshelf speakers, in a slim format that mounts on the wall next to a television or sits on a shelf using the included tempered glass stand.

Drivers from the Reference Premiere lineup

The RP-140D is a 2-way bass-reflex ported speaker. Its 25 mm titanium dome tweeter uses the LTS (Linear Travel Suspension) found on standard Reference Premiere speakers: the diaphragm travels linearly over a longer excursion, which reduces distortion and preserves dynamics during volume peaks. This tweeter is loaded by a 90° x 90° Tractrix horn, a geometry unique to Klipsch that focuses high frequencies toward the listening area and improves stereo imaging precision.

Bass and midrange are handled by a 8.9 cm Cerametallic cone driver, a ceramic-metal alloy that combines rigidity and lightness. This rigidity limits cone breakup and the resulting distortion, while the low mass allows the driver to respond quickly to transients. The crossover frequency between the two ways is set at 2,200 Hz.

High sensitivity and amplification

With a sensitivity of 91 dB (2.83 V / 1 m), the RP-140D draws a good sound level from most home theater amplifiers without pushing them hard. Klipsch rates it at 50 W continuous and 200 W peak power handling, with a nominal impedance of 8 ohms. In practice, a standard living room amplifier is sufficient to drive it, with plenty of headroom before reaching its limits.

The stated frequency response extends from 69 Hz to 25 kHz (±3 dB). The bass reaches quite low for such a compact format, but if the installation serves as a home theater system, adding a subwoofer is still recommended to cover the very low frequencies found in soundtracks.

Wall mounting or freestanding: two configurations

The back of the speaker features two sets of keyhole mounting slots, oriented to allow both vertical and horizontal installation. The speaker sits flush against the wall with no additional bracket required. Integrated channels on the rear of the cabinet allow speaker cable (up to 18 AWG) to be routed along the housing before connecting to the binding posts, making for a clean, discreet cable run. Klipsch recommends wall anchors rated for at least 2.7 kg if mounting away from a stud.

For placement on furniture or a shelf, a tempered glass stand is included with the speaker. It also supports both vertical and horizontal orientations. The Klipsch logo on the front baffle can rotate 45° to remain upright regardless of the chosen position.

Versatility in a multichannel system

The RP-140D can fill any position in a home theater system: left, right, center, or surround channel. Its symmetrical 90° x 90° Tractrix horn dispersion delivers the same result whether the speaker is installed vertically or horizontally, making it interchangeable between channels without any notable compromise in sound coverage.

It integrates naturally with the other models in the Designer On-Wall series: the RP-240D (two woofers, 94 dB sensitivity) and the RP-640D (two active drivers and four passive radiators), which share the same tweeter and Cerametallic cone technologies. A complete system can pair the RP-640D as the center channel, a pair of RP-240D speakers up front, and RP-140D speakers as surrounds, with sonic consistency ensured by the uniformity of the drivers.

Finish and magnetic grille

The cabinet is molded in ABS and finished in matte black paint. The lines are clean, with no patterns or embellishments, designed to blend in next to a flat-screen display. The front grille attaches magnetically: a fine fabric stretched between two metal rods, designed to be as acoustically transparent as possible. Once removed, the grille reveals the copper-colored cone characteristic of the Reference Premiere lineup.

Dimensions and placement

The speaker measures 30.5 cm tall, 15.2 cm wide, and 6.1 cm deep. Its slim footprint allows placement just a few centimeters from a wall-mounted television. Klipsch recommends a spacing of 2 to 4.5 m between the left and right speakers for proper stereo imaging, with the listening position at a distance of 1 to 1.5 times the speaker separation. For surround use, placement approximately 60 cm above ear level promotes an immersive sound experience. The manufacturer notes that ceiling mounting is not intended: the keyholes are not designed to support the speaker’s weight in that configuration.
