Overview

In a hi-fi setup, the cable cross-section must match the length of the runs and the power flowing through them. The CSC 250 C uses a cross-section of 2.5 mm² per conductor, a comfortable gauge for covering several meters without audible bass loss. The transparent PVC jacket reveals the copper of the two cores, and sales by the linear meter allow the cut length to be tailored to the layout of each room.

A 2.5 mm² cross-section per conductor

The choice of 2.5 mm² places this cable in the thick-gauge category, useful as soon as the run exceeds five or six meters or the amplifier delivers sustained power. The linear resistance remains low, which reduces voltage drop over the length and preserves transfer quality between the amplifier and the speakers. The damping factor, which depends in part on the total resistance of the connection, benefits from this oversizing, especially in the bass where current variations are most pronounced.

For a short run of two or three meters, a more modest cross-section would technically be sufficient. The oversizing has no acoustic drawback, simply making it a bit bulkier to hide behind a piece of furniture or along a baseboard.

Transparent and flexible PVC jacket

The outer jacket reveals the strands of the two conductors. The copper color itself becomes the visual marker for distinguishing polarity, without the need for printed markings or a colored stripe. The selected PVC provides adequate flexibility, enough to follow a baseboard, run along the back of a cabinet, or pass through trunking without notable effort. Repeated twisting during connections does not cause troublesome shape memory. The mechanical robustness is suitable for indoor use; for outdoor or buried installation, a cable certified for those conditions remains preferable.

Sold by the linear meter

Sold by the meter, it avoids offcuts and intermediate splices. For a standard stereo setup, you order the total combined length of the two amplifier-to-speaker runs; for a multichannel system, you add up the distances to each speaker while allowing a little extra for the actual routing and the service loops at the terminals. The same original spool serves all positions, which equalizes the resistance seen by each channel and simplifies system balancing.

Frequently asked questions

Is the cable polarized or directional?

No, this two-core copper cable is not directional in the technical sense. However, positive and negative polarity must be respected at both ends, otherwise the phase of one speaker may be reversed relative to the other, which degrades the stereo image and bass. The transparent jacket makes it possible to define a convention by directly observing the copper and to maintain it לאורך the entire run.

Can it be used outdoors?

The standard PVC jacket is not designed to withstand UV, moisture, or significant temperature variations over the long term. For a covered terrace or a sheltered veranda, use is possible with a few precautions (fastening, annual inspection). For a garden installation, buried setup, or exposure to the elements, an outdoor-rated cable with a UV- and water-resistant jacket remains more durable.

What is the difference compared with a 1.5 mm² cross-section?

1.5 mm² is well suited to short runs (less than five meters) and modest power levels. Beyond that distance, the linear resistance becomes a non-negligible fraction of the speaker’s impedance, with slight bass loss and a degraded damping factor. The 2.5 mm² almost doubles the copper cross-section and moves the useful threshold to ten or twelve meters for a standard run.

Should banana plugs always be used?

Not mandatory. Bare, twisted cable holds correctly in the majority of screw terminals or spring-clip terminals. Banana plugs provide a faster connection, a cleaner visual finish, and better long-term stability, especially if you frequently reconnect your speakers. For a fixed installation, bare cable remains an effective solution, provided the strands are properly twisted and you check that no stray wire touches the other conductor.

How can polarity be identified without printed markings?

The transparent jacket lets you directly see the two conductors. The common method is to choose a consistent visual marker at the time of cutting (for example, the conductor on the same side as a mark on the jacket, or the strand showing a different shade) and to carry that marker through to both ends. A marker pen mark or a small piece of colored adhesive tape on one of the two sides establishes the convention in a durable way.
